Position Summary

The Pathologist Assistant II plays a crucial role in the examination, dissection, and processing of anatomic pathology specimens.

Reporting Structure
Reports directly to the Anatomic Pathology Manager.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist in the preparation and execution of surgical specimen examinations, including:
- Responsible for the accessioning of surgical pathology specimens.
- Gather clinical histories, including necessary radiographs and laboratory data.

In collaboration with the pathologist and adhering to standard CAP grossing guidelines, the assistant will describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissues for microscopic analysis.

Documentation will include dictation of gross findings and block submission data. Preparation may involve touch smear preparation, quick-freezing of tissue, photography, or other specialized techniques. A Grossing manual will be utilized.


- Review complex or rare cases with the sign-out pathologist.
- Assist pathologists in performing frozen sections, including tissue selection, freezing, cutting, and staining.

The Pathologist Assistant will collaborate closely with medical and laboratory directors to uphold standards that minimize errors and ensure high-quality results while maintaining efficient turnaround times in the grossing area.

Document and report QA errors, implementing new procedures as necessary to prevent future occurrences.


- Aim to process all biopsies on the day of collection, with routine case turnaround times targeted at 2 to 3 days.
- Systematically gross cases to maintain optimal quality.
- Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and inventory in surgical pathology.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations within the anatomic pathology service.

Assist with autopsies as required, including body preparation, dissection, organ sampling, and other tasks as directed by the attending pathologist.

Handle pathology computer system responsibilities, including report writing, generation, problem-solving, and other necessary tasks.

Engage in ongoing performance evaluations and continuing education, which may include:
- Attendance at weekly tumor boards
- Monthly reviews of random cases
- Daily feedback from pathologists
- Maintenance of grossing procedures per CAP standards
- Participation in available continuing education opportunities.


- Perform other duties related to anatomic pathology or general laboratory tasks as assigned by the laboratory manager or pathologists.

Demonstrate adherence to the Standards of Behavior and the Code of Conduct in all job performance aspects.


Position Requirements

Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is a fundamental requirement for employment at Confluence Health. Exemptions for religious and medical reasons will be considered upon request.

Qualifications

Required:
- PA (ASCP) certification or eligibility (must pass within 6 months of hire) or relevant experience prior to certification.
- Bachelor's degree and completion of a pathologist-approved Pathology Assistant training program.
- Completion of an accredited educational training program for Pathology Assistants.
- Proven skills in performing routine Pathology Assistant functions, including:
- Preparation and performance of surgical specimen examinations for both small and large cases.
- Proficiency in the preparation and assistance of frozen sections.

Desired:
- Master's degree in an approved Pathology Assistant Program.
- Documented work experience as a Pathology Assistant for a minimum of one year; however, new graduates are also welcome to apply.
