Position Summary:

The Anatomic Pathology Specialist II plays a crucial role in the examination, dissection, and processing of anatomic pathology specimens.

Reporting Structure:

This position reports directly to the Anatomic Pathology Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Assist in the surgical specimen examination process, which includes:
    • Accessioning surgical pathology specimens.
    • Gathering clinical histories, including necessary radiographs and laboratory data.
    • Collaborating with pathologists to describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissues for microscopic analysis, following standard guidelines.
    • Handling complex cases in consultation with the sign-out pathologist.
    • Supporting pathologists in performing frozen sections through various techniques.
  2. Work in conjunction with medical and laboratory directors to uphold quality standards and minimize errors, ensuring efficient turnaround times.
    • Document and report quality assurance errors, implementing corrective measures as needed.
    • Strive to process all biopsies on the day they are collected, with routine turnaround times of 2 to 3 days.
    • Maintain systematic processing of cases to ensure optimal quality.
    • Oversee equipment and inventory maintenance in the surgical pathology area.
    • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations within the anatomic pathology service.
  3. Assist with autopsies as required, including body preparation and organ sampling.
  4. Manage pathology computer system tasks, including report generation and problem-solving.
  5. Engage in ongoing performance evaluations and continuing education, which may involve:
    • Participation in weekly tumor boards.
    • Monthly reviews of random cases.
    • Daily feedback sessions with pathologists.
    • Maintaining grossing procedures in accordance with established standards.
  6. Perform additional duties related to anatomic pathology or general laboratory functions as assigned.

Adhere to the Standards of Behavior and the Code of Conduct in all job-related activities.

Position Requirements:

COVID-19 Vaccination: Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is a mandatory requirement for employment.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Certification as a Pathologist Assistant (ASCP) or eligibility to obtain certification within six months of hire.
  • A Bachelor’s degree along with completion of a pathologist-approved Pathology Assistant training program.
  • Completion of an accredited educational training program for Pathology Assistants.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing routine Pathology Assistant functions, including surgical specimen examination and proficiency in frozen section preparation.

Desired:

  • A Master’s degree from an approved Pathology Assistant Program.
  • Documented experience as a Pathology Assistant for at least one year; however, new graduates are also welcome to apply.
