The role involves preparing and screening all pap smears and non-gyn cytology slides, along with providing evaluations and diagnoses.

Essential Functions:
  1. Assist in the preparation and examination of surgical and cytology specimens.
  2. Responsible for the accessioning of surgical and cytology pathology specimens.
  3. Collaborate with pathologists to describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissues for microscopic analysis, including dictation of findings.
  4. Support pathologists in performing frozen sections through tissue selection, freezing, cutting, and staining.
  5. Screen all pap smears and non-gyn cytology slides.
  6. Prepare or assist in the preparation of cytology slides for examination.
  7. Oversee the preparation of special cytology fixatives.
  8. Assist in inventory management and ordering for cytology supplies.
  9. Work closely with anatomic pathology leadership to develop new tests and troubleshoot existing ones.
  10. Utilize computer systems for data entry and report generation.
  11. Assist pathologists and clinicians in obtaining optimal cytologic specimens.
  12. Maintain or supervise the maintenance of pap files and histology-cytology correlation studies.
  13. Collaborate with anatomic pathology leadership to develop and uphold quality control procedures.
  14. Assist in the preparation of QA manuals and participate in monthly reviews.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Completion of a 1-year Cytology program.
  • ASCP licensure for Cytology or equivalent, or registry eligible (for new graduates).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in screening GYN and non-GYN cases.

Desired:

  • One year of prior experience.
  • Experience with computerization and the creation of procedure manuals in NCCLS format.
