Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee, to join our team at the University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care. This is a full-time position that will work in our Clinical Cancer Center and Ambulatory Surgery Center pharmacies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pharmacy Operations
    • Under pharmacist supervision, prepare patient-specific sterile products, including hazardous medications.
    • Accurately compound medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatient requests.
    • Perform daily cleanroom maintenance activities, including cleaning and decontamination of the hood, and review and documentation of hood maintenance activities.
  • Patient Service
    • Provide patient/customer service at the Triage Window, communicating with the general public, patients, and other healthcare personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
    • Screen prescriptions for completeness and formulary status, and determine waiting/pick-up time and fill out patient call check.
    • Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.
  • Order Entry and Filling
    • Enter patient profile information, patient coverage/third-party information, and read and interpret prescriptions, including calculation of dose and/or quantity to be dispensed.
    • Generate a "Note to Dispensing Pharmacist" as needed.
    • Fill/refill prescriptions, reading labels for accuracy and correcting as needed, and labeling and packaging the correct medication.
  • Inventory and Maintenance
    • Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including conducting weekly and monthly inventories, ordering replacement supplies, and auditing records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances.
    • Generate and/or maintain records related to prescription dispensing, including hard copies of prescriptions, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits.
Requirements
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), with ongoing education requirements and maintenance of certification.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences, or satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with public contact/customer service.
  • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations.
  • Experience with inventory maintenance activities.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience working in a detail-oriented work environment.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer programs.
  • Experience working in a healthcare environment with one-on-one patient interaction and experience handling challenging interactions in a work environment.
