Job Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee, to work in our Clinical Cancer Center and Ambulatory Surgery Center pharmacies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Under general pharmacist supervision, coordinates and performs technical activities of dispensing areas, including one-on-one contact with patients in their hospital room, discretionary patient room entry, and collaboration with hospital unit staff.
  • Carries out activities supportive of development, coordination, and training of assigned areas, providing functional supervision as required.
  • Prepares patient-specific sterile products, including hazardous medications, under pharmacist supervision.
  • Accurately compounds medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatient requests, using appropriate PPE and following NIOSH, USP, and SOP guidelines.
  • Performs daily cleanroom maintenance activities, including cleaning and decontamination of hoods, review and documentation of hood maintenance activities.
  • Provides patient/customer service at the Triage Window, communicating with the general public, patients, and other healthcare personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Receives and screens prescriptions for completeness and checks for prescription readiness.
  • Conducts interviews with patients or their representatives to collect and record patient profile information, including demographic information, third-party coverage information, weight of pediatric patients, medication allergy information, medical conditions, and current medications being taken.
  • Screens prescriptions for completeness and formulary status, determines waiting/pick-up time, and fills out patient call checks.
  • Triage prescriptions to the appropriate team, recognizing workflow patterns for effective triage of prescriptions.
  • Answers telephone lines and triages phone calls per established policies and procedures.
  • Orders entry of prescriptions, enters patient profile information, and enters patient coverage/third-party information.
  • Reads and interprets prescriptions, including calculation of dose and/or quantity to be dispensed, and enters into the computer.
  • Generates a "Note to Dispensing Pharmacist" as needed.
  • Fills/refills prescriptions, reads labels for accuracy, and corrects as needed.
  • Labels and packages the correct medication.
  • Maintains area orderliness and cleanliness, assists in on-the-job training of new technicians, and coordinates technical activities with other members of the team.
  • Conducts assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only), auditing areas for compliance with medication security, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration date, and appropriate drug storage and references.
  • Performs activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including conducting weekly and monthly inventories, ordering replacement supplies from internal sources, auditing records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances, and resolving discrepancies on issuance forms.
  • Generates and/or maintains appropriate records related to prescription dispensing, including hard copies of prescriptions, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits.
  • Performs inventory maintenance activities, including returning to stock medications that have not been picked up by patients and generating a credit form to forward to Pharmacy Data Processing.
  • Enters all transferred drugs on Inventory Transfer Form, orders diabetic, hemophiliac, and miscellaneous supplies from Hospital Stores, and performs daily and monthly drug inventories as requested.
  • Prepares prescriptions for mailing and shipping according to established policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) for Certified Technicians.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences or satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations.
  • Experience with inventory maintenance activities.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience working in a detail-oriented work environment.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer programs.
  • Experience working in an environment requiring accuracy.
  • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction and experience handling challenging interactions in a work environment.
