Job Summary

The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics is seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee to join our team in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting the dispensing and patient care activities of our pharmacy team.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide exceptional patient/customer service, communicating effectively with the general public, patients, and other healthcare personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
• Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.
• Conduct interviews with patients or their representatives to collect and record patient profile information.
• Screen prescriptions for completeness and formulary status, determining waiting/pick-up time and filling out patient call checks.
• Triage prescriptions to the appropriate team, recognizing workflow patterns for effective triage of prescriptions.
• Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.

Technical Responsibilities

• Utilize and maintain the ScriptPro Robot, filling cells/cassettes, cleaning cells/cassettes, mapping brand changes/assigning drugs to cells, returning unwanted prescriptions to cells, and performing daily maintenance.
• Fill/refill prescriptions, reading labels for accuracy and correcting as needed, labeling and packaging the correct medication.
• Accurately compound medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatients, answering the dedicated prescription refill telephone line.
• Generate prescription refill labels, verifying addresses for prescriptions to be mailed and the date medication is needed, filling out call checks and noting pickup time or date to be mailed.
• Prepare prescriptions for mailing and shipping according to established policies and procedures, performing inventory maintenance activities.
• Return to stock medications that have not been picked up by patients, ordering supplies from Hospital Stores, and performing daily and monthly drug inventories as requested.

Additional Responsibilities

• Generate and/or maintain appropriate records related to prescription dispensing, such as hard copies of prescriptions, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits.
• Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including conducting weekly and monthly inventories, ordering replacement supplies from internal sources, auditing records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances, and resolving discrepancies on issuance forms.
• Conduct assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only), auditing areas for compliance with medication security, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration date, and appropriate drug storage and references.
• Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness, assisting in on-the-job training of new technicians, coordinating technical activities with other members of the team, and ensuring the accurate and efficient completion of tasks.

Requirements

• Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
• National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), with ongoing education requirements and certification maintenance.
• High school diploma or the equivalent.
• Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences, or satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with public contact/customer service, inventory maintenance activities, and working in a team environment.
• Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations, knowledge of Windows-based computer programs, and experience working in a detail-oriented work environment.
• Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction and experience handling challenging interactions in a work environment.
• Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level.
