The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician to join our team in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care. This full-time position will be based in our Acute Care, IV Ads Pharmacy and will work under the general supervision of a pharmacist.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in pharmacy operations and be able to perform a variety of technical activities, including inventory maintenance, medication dispensing, and quality control. They will also be responsible for providing functional supervision to student technicians and assisting with on-the-job training.

We are looking for a candidate who is able to work effectively in a team environment and has excellent communication skills. The successful candidate will be registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire and will be required to maintain certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform activities associated with inventory maintenance, including reviewing pharmacy medication inventory for expired medications and maintaining medication inventory levels according to established par levels.
  • Manage inpatient Epic In-Baskets, including printing labels for missing medications and preparing and/or packaging medications.
  • Deliver medications to patient care areas and return medications from patient care areas that are no longer needed.
  • Ensure that medication security is maintained when working in the patient care unit medication rooms.
  • Generate, review and maintain appropriate records related to medication distribution and dispensing.
  • Utilize various equipment, including laminar flow hoods, computerized label printers, pharmaceutical packaging and compounding equipment and pneumatic tube system.
  • Maintain competencies in proper sterile product preparation and utilize aseptic technique when preparing and manipulating sterile products.
  • Compound sterile products, including anti-neoplastic drugs in bulk supplies and single doses.
  • Package and compound non-sterile products in bulk supplies and single doses.
  • Conducts and documents monthly inspections of patient care areas.
  • Assist with on-the-job training of pharmacy students and new technicians.
  • Perform tasks associated with refilling AcuDose Medstations and assisting pharmacist in conducting inspection of all medications stored on patient care unit.

Requirements:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with inventory maintenance activities.
  • Experience working in team environment.
  • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment.
  • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs.
  • Experience working in environment requiring accuracy.
  • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment.
