Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Aquatic Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a secure swimming environment in the pool, on the deck, and in adjacent areas. This role fosters a welcoming and respectful atmosphere for all individuals, emphasizing member safety and engagement in line with YMCA standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts vigilant monitoring of the swimming area.
  • Familiarizes with and executes all emergency protocols, responding promptly to crises as per YMCA guidelines. Completes necessary documentation as required.
  • Understands and consistently implements safety regulations, policies, and procedures for the aquatic environment. Maintains precise records as mandated by the YMCA and relevant health authorities.
  • Builds and sustains positive relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff.
  • Performs equipment inspections and ensures availability of necessary gear.
  • Assesses the pool for potential hazards upon arrival.
  • Engages in routine cleaning tasks.
  • Participates in all staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age requirement of 15 years or older.
  • Certifications: CPR for the professional rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and current American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness at certification levels.
  • Must exhibit lifeguard competencies in accordance with American Red Cross standards.

  • Ability to physically execute all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Capable of hearing sounds and distress signals in the aquatic setting, including within the water and throughout the designated area of responsibility.
  • Must remain alert without lapses in attention.
  • Ability to see and monitor all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
