Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The role is essential in ensuring a secure swimming environment in the aquatic facility, on the pool deck, and in adjacent areas. The individual will foster a welcoming and secure atmosphere that respects all patrons while promoting safety and engagement in alignment with the policies and procedures of YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County Inc.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts continuous monitoring of the swimming area.
  • Familiarizes with and executes all emergency protocols, responding promptly to any urgent situations in accordance with established guidelines. Completes necessary documentation as required.
  • Understands and consistently implements safety regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to the aquatic environment. Maintains accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and/or local health regulations.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff.
  • Performs equipment inspections and ensures that all necessary gear is readily available.
  • Assesses the pool for any hazardous conditions upon arrival.
  • Engages in routine cleaning tasks.
  • Participates in all staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age requirement of 15 years or older.
  • Certifications: CPR for the professional rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and current American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness at certification levels.
  • Must exhibit lifeguard competencies in accordance with American Red Cross standards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The physical demands outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to effectively perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill these functions.
  • Ability to physically perform all required lifeguard skills.
  • Ability to hear sounds and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and throughout the designated area of responsibility.
  • Must remain vigilant with no lapses in attention.
  • Ability to see and monitor all sections of the assigned area of responsibility.
