About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Mission Development Lead to join our team at Maxar Technologies. As a key member of our Flight Software Systems Engineering team, you will be responsible for leading the development of mission-critical software systems for our space-based programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and apply core systems engineering principles to mission development, ensuring the delivery of high-quality software systems that meet customer requirements.
  • Lead cross-functional teams through the full lifecycle of solutions, from concept to delivery, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and aligned.
  • Make technical decisions and provide guidance to team members on systems engineering best practices.
  • Partner with engineering management to decompose mission functionality and operational scenarios, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Design, develop, validate, document, and deliver cost-effective embedded determination and controls software that meets product, customer, and mission requirements.
  • Accountable for flight control requirements sell-off to stakeholders and customers, and demonstration of integration readiness at various program milestones.
  • Develop mission capability, build business cases, support CTO, strategy, and executive sponsors as directed.
  • Generate appropriate engineering artifacts, such as Design Review presentations and Interface Control Documents, at the appropriate level for consumption by stakeholders and/or Development team members.
  • Engage actively in all program risk management activities.
  • Lead and contribute to senior-level engineering reviews as needed.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to successfully bring together diverse teams made up of multiple engineering and business disciplines.
  • Create and drive a culture of teamwork, ownership, transparency, accountability, and crisp execution to goals.
  • Lead and coach matrixed, cross-functional teams of subject matter experts, engineers, and emerging leaders.
  • Guide the existing and any new processes necessary to hit business objectives while streamlining and/or eliminating non-critical work.
  • Work collaboratively with other senior engineering leaders to transform engineering development processes to enable efficient development of large-scale complex systems.
  • In support of Program and engineering management, provide technical direction to Systems and Software Engineering teams to identify high-potential engineers and develop a talent growth strategy within the technical team.
  • Partner with Maxar Space product and mission architecture teams to ensure direct linkage to product and technical strategies.
  • Travel as necessary to ensure team cohesion and Program and Product success.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipline or related field plus a minimum of 8 years of related professional experience; or 6 years of professional experience with a Master's degree; or a PhD with 4 years of professional experience may be considered.
  • 4 years of additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Flight Software Development Experience (methodologies, best practices).
  • Understanding of systems/software engineering development lifecycle process for large-scale, complex space systems.
  • Conversant in space system disciplines.
  • Experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering for Software, experience and applications of architecture and design patterns (GoF).
  • Experience developing 4+1 architecture view models for software.
  • Applicants must have broad leadership and deep engineering, manufacturing, software, and testing background experience.
  • Applicant must have familiarity with aerospace industry best practices, with the demonstrated ability to select and apply commercial or government standards as needed or directed.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Teams, Project, and Visio.
  • Familiarity with Jira and GitLab.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability and willingness to obtain up to a TS/SCI with Polygraph clearance.
  • Matlab & Simulink Experience.
  • Experience with all phases of spacecraft integration and test-related activities ranging from proposal development through on-orbit commissioning operations.
  • 7+ years' experience as a people manager, directly or indirectly.
  • Experience leading technical execution on challenged programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to grow and develop people and work collaboratively with peers to establish new processes and improve existing processes.
  • Business Experience: Experience operating in a variety of dynamic situations, including startups, turnarounds, realignments, and high growth.
  • Experience leading integrated and cross-functional technology and business teams.
  • Ability to analyze, prioritize, and resolve issues independently.
  • Ability to partner effectively with both highly technical and non-technical team members and integrate that expertise into executable plans.
  • Creative problem solver with sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to facilitate swift, informed decision making at all levels of the business and technical teams.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and executive communication skills.
