Position Overview

This role operates primarily within the Orthotic Prosthetic Clinical Service as a vital component of the Veterans Health Administration's Prosthetics and Sensory Aides Service Line. This service line is distinguished by its fully integrated system at the regional level.

Key Responsibilities

The Non-Supervisory GS 12 Orthotist-Prosthetist serves as an Advanced Practitioner in smaller independent O&P facilities, dedicating over 25% of their time to complex and diverse higher-level tasks beyond the full performance level of GS 11. Certification by ABC or BOC as both an Orthotist and Prosthetist is essential for this role, alongside ongoing education to maintain this certification and fulfill VA training requirements. A Bachelor’s degree or higher in orthotics and prosthetics, or a Bachelor’s in another field combined with a postgraduate orthotics and prosthetics certificate from a CAAHEP accredited program, is required for promotion beyond the GS 11 level.

In addition to the responsibilities of GS 11, the Orthotist-Prosthetist at this level ensures laboratory accreditation, regulatory compliance, and manages various administrative tasks including budget formulation, resource management, oversight of contract personnel, scheduling of orthotic and prosthetic services, vendor site evaluations, and the establishment of both short and long-term objectives in alignment with local and national directives.

The Orthotist-Prosthetist is developing expertise in administrative functions such as budget oversight, inventory control, and workload planning, along with knowledge of national prosthetic databases and accreditation standards for O&P facilities. They are skilled in data analysis and report generation utilizing various patient database systems.

Effective communication and collaboration with physicians, allied health professionals, patients, and caregivers in interdisciplinary clinical environments is crucial for formulating orthotic and/or prosthetic treatment strategies. This position involves intricate patient evaluations for those with unique or multiple complex conditions, assessing contraindications, and collaborating with healthcare providers to create comprehensive treatment plans. The Orthotist-Prosthetist is expected to stay informed about emerging technologies to design innovative devices for a wide array of medical conditions.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

a. Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.

b. Education: A Bachelor’s degree or higher in orthotics and prosthetics from a CAAHEP accredited program, or a Bachelor’s degree in any field with a postgraduate orthotics or prosthetics certificate from a CAAHEP accredited program.

c. Board Certification: Candidates must hold current board certification from the ABC or BOC as an orthotist, prosthetist, or both.

d. Physical Requirements: Must meet physical demands as outlined in VA guidelines.

e. English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential.

Grade Determinations:

To qualify for the GS-12 level, candidates must have one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, demonstrating significant involvement in treatment planning for complex conditions.
