Company Background

We are dedicated to unveiling new opportunities and driving transformation for a sustainable future. Our analytical solutions integrate content, data, and insights to empower businesses, individuals, and communities to become more resilient and sustainable.

Position Summary

Join the Research and Modeling Department within Extreme Event Solutions and play a pivotal role in developing catastrophe models and products that address risk assessment in the context of climate change. In this position, you will have the chance to create scientifically robust, statistically sound, and computationally efficient models focused on precipitation that leads to flooding. Collaborating with a team of scientists, you will innovate and implement advanced solutions to enhance Verisk's hydrometeorological risk assessment capabilities while supporting client-facing teams on precipitation-related challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert knowledge essential for constructing scientifically accurate models of extreme precipitation.
  • Gather and analyze diverse in-situ and gridded precipitation datasets.
  • Develop, refine, and validate both statistical and physically based precipitation models, emphasizing practical applications such as stochastic simulation, statistical downscaling, and risk evaluation.
  • Collaborate with meteorologists, hydrologists, and hydraulic engineers to convert stochastic precipitation simulations into a comprehensive understanding of global precipitation flood risk.
  • Evaluate and provide insights on the latest climate change research concerning its effects on precipitation extremes.
  • Occasionally operate in real-time or near-real-time to ensure accurate representation of significant precipitation events under tight deadlines.
  • Present models and pertinent analytics to clients, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders.
Qualifications

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • An advanced degree in hydrometeorology, atmospheric sciences, applied statistics, or related fields, with experience in weather and climate extremes. A PhD is preferred, though exceptional candidates with a Master's degree and relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of probability theory and (geo)statistics, with significant experience in statistical analysis, downscaling, or stochastic simulation of precipitation being advantageous.
  • Strong programming skills developed through practical experience with high-level languages and tools such as R, Python, MATLAB, C++, or FORTRAN. Familiarity with collaborative code development and version control is a plus.
  • Experience in gathering, integrating, and critically analyzing data from various sources of natural hazard information, including national and international agencies and private entities, in both real-time and historical contexts.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, particularly in presenting to diverse audiences.
  • A highly motivated approach with the ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple tasks. Project management experience is an added advantage.
