POSITION SUMMARY

The Recovery Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering a range of recovery-focused services to individuals engaged in the First-Episode and Early Psychosis Program. This program is dedicated to assisting young adults aged 13-35 who have recently experienced the onset of a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. As a vital member of the team, the Recovery Support Specialist fosters independence, self-determination, community involvement, and overall wellness among individuals in mental health recovery.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Recovery Support Specialist is responsible for:

  • Guiding individuals in identifying their wellness and recovery objectives, including the development of tools such as Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) to support self-determined goals.
  • Providing trauma-informed, individualized community support that emphasizes holistic health and wellness.
  • Engaging with individuals through their preferred communication methods, whether by phone, virtual meetings, or in-person interactions.
  • Assisting individuals in navigating the mental health, medical, and social service systems effectively.
  • Actively involving individuals and their families in the treatment and recovery journey.
  • Empowering individuals to develop self-advocacy skills and combat stigma associated with mental health challenges.
  • Facilitating both individual and group peer support sessions focused on recovery, resilience, and resource connection.
  • Maintaining current information on community resources for self-help and recovery, while collaborating to enhance community connections.
  • Serving as a liaison for various community resources related to peer support services.
  • Adhering to the ethical standards outlined in the Massachusetts Certified Peer Specialist Code of Ethics, including maintaining high personal conduct standards that support personal recovery.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary meetings and advocating for clients.
  • Contributing a lived experience perspective to the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Ensuring effective communication with team members to coordinate treatment planning and share relevant information.
  • Documenting all peer interactions accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record system.
  • Receiving regular supervision and seeking additional guidance as needed.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development activities related to job responsibilities.
  • Performing other administrative duties as required.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with clients and team members.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to provide care to a diverse population.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to respond effectively in crisis situations.
  • The ability to navigate public transportation and community settings safely.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Recovery Support Specialist will be an integral member of the First-Episode and Early Psychosis Program team, reporting to licensed clinical supervisors. The role involves a hybrid work model, combining virtual and in-person responsibilities based on program needs and client preferences. All transportation with clients will utilize public transit, and personal vehicle use is not permitted.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Recovery Support Specialist must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a current or former recipient of mental health services and be in recovery.
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree or a high school diploma/GED with at least one year of relevant experience working with adults facing severe mental health challenges.
  • Hold certification as a Certified Peer Specialist from an accredited training program at the time of hire.
