Position Overview

About the Role

The Hunger Advocacy Fellow will engage in a transformative year-long experience that merges leadership development with impactful advocacy aimed at eradicating hunger and fostering a just society where everyone has access to food.

This position involves collaboration with Kansas Interfaith Action, where the Fellow will become an integral part of the staff at this ELCA-affiliated state public policy office. The role is a full-time contract position with a competitive hourly wage and benefits, including health insurance.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Advocacy Engagement: Cultivate a Lutheran state advocacy network by empowering community members and connecting with congregational ministries. Facilitate platforms for individuals affected by hunger to voice their experiences to policymakers.
  2. Communications: Develop and disseminate educational materials, including action alerts and position papers, to inform the advocacy network and lawmakers about hunger-related priorities.
  3. Representation: Actively participate in coalitions advocating for public policy aligned with ELCA's mission and engage with state lawmakers and public policy leaders.
  4. Leadership Development: Collaborate with various ELCA teams and other Hunger Advocacy Fellows to enhance faith formation and leadership skills throughout the year.
  5. Additional duties as assigned in collaboration with the state public policy office director.

Qualifications

  1. Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to engaging with community members affected by hunger.
  2. Willingness to learn about the ELCA's mission and public policy advocacy.
  3. Understanding of the biblical and theological foundations of the church's advocacy work.
  4. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  5. Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  6. Familiarity with social issues impacting communities and the ability to engage diverse audiences.
