Position Overview

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a prominent Christian denomination in the United States, dedicated to fostering a community rooted in faith, justice, and love. The ELCA is committed to addressing social issues and advocating for those in need, particularly in the realm of hunger and economic injustice.

About the Role

The Hunger Advocacy Fellow will engage in a comprehensive year-long experience that merges leadership development with impactful advocacy aimed at eradicating hunger and promoting a just society where everyone has access to food.

The Fellow will be integrated into the Kansas Interfaith Action, functioning as a full-time contract employee. This role offers a competitive hourly wage along with benefits, including health insurance.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Advocacy Engagement: Develop and nurture a Lutheran state advocacy network by collaborating with communities to empower individuals for hunger advocacy. This includes connecting with congregational ministries to provide essential tools for moral deliberation and faith-based advocacy.
  2. Communications: Create, research, and edit various communication materials such as action alerts, position papers, and social media content to inform and educate stakeholders about hunger advocacy priorities.
  3. Representation: Actively participate in ecumenical and human service coalitions, advocating for public policy positions aligned with the ELCA's mission.
  4. Leadership Development: Engage with various ELCA teams and networks throughout the year to foster collective faith formation and leadership skills.
  5. Collaborate with the state public policy office director to identify additional responsibilities as needed.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Strong interpersonal skills and an engaging personality, with a readiness to interact with community members affected by hunger or poverty.
  2. Willingness to learn about the ELCA's mission and public policy advocacy.
  3. Understanding of the biblical and theological foundations of the church's commitment to advocacy.
  4. Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to lead public forums.
  6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Work Environment

This position requires regular in-office attendance and minimal travel, which may include overnight domestic travel.
