Job Summary

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Director of Research Data and Library Services. This pivotal role will provide strategic direction for innovative and agile library services for a world-class research community, as well as the curation, preservation, and distribution of WHOI's mission-critical data.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Strategic Direction: Collaborate with stakeholders to devise strategic approaches for ensuring researcher-generated data are FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable).
  • Data Curation and Preservation: Develop and implement strategies for the curation, preservation, and distribution of WHOI's mission-critical data, including data from research vessels and the National Deep Submergence Facility.
  • Library Services and Innovation: Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for innovative and agile library services, aligning them with the evolving needs of the broader Woods Hole scientific community.
  • Team Management and Development: Recruit, develop, and evaluate a team of librarians, contributing to their professional growth, development, and retention, and fostering an environment that values diversity and individuality.
  • Training and Education: Develop training programs for the local community around best FAIR data practices.
  • Community Engagement: Cultivate a visible and active presence in Woods Hole and the library, working on campus at least three days per week.
Requirements
  • Education: Master's degree in library and information science or equivalent degree or experience.
  • Experience: At least five years of substantial and progressively responsible relevant experience in organizational and fiscal management.
  • Skills: Proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; a record of scholarly/creative accomplishments; experience with contract negotiations and budgeting; and library/information science participation.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrated command of trends in scientific data, information policy, and information technologies.
  • Leadership: Skills to maintain effective relationships while building consensus with staff, constituents, and professional colleagues.
Working Environment
  • Office Location: On-site preferred, remote will be considered.
