POSITION SUMMARY

The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of its community members and visitors. The Tribal Police Department plays a crucial role in enforcing tribal regulations and relevant federal laws, collaborating with various law enforcement entities to foster a secure environment. Our officers maintain a strong rapport with the community, engaging with residents and visitors regularly to enhance public safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct regular patrols within the community and properties owned by the Shingle Springs Band to deter and investigate criminal activities.
  2. Respond to community requests for police services and outreach initiatives.
  3. Become acquainted with local routes and community dynamics.
  4. Coordinate search and rescue operations as required.
  5. Investigate suspicious activities and disturbances, taking appropriate action as per established protocols.
  6. Engage in investigative interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  7. Collect and secure evidence from crime scenes.
  8. Provide first aid and public safety assistance during emergencies.
  9. Examine traffic incidents and their causes within the community.
  10. Support external agencies in maintaining order during crises or natural disasters.
  11. Serve as a Bailiff during Tribal Court proceedings.
  12. Manage traffic flow during events and emergencies.
  13. Utilize police communication and computer systems for information management.
  14. Participate in community meetings to address crime prevention and safety concerns.
  15. Document incidents, investigations, and activities through detailed reports.
  16. Testify in court to present evidence and describe relevant situations.
  17. Familiarize oneself with Tribal Codes, ordinances, and applicable laws.
  18. Promote a safe work environment by adhering to safety policies.
  19. Perform additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be at least 21 years old.
  2. A high school diploma or GED is required.
  3. Ability to pass medical and psychological evaluations is essential.
  4. Willingness to undergo a polygraph examination is necessary.
  5. Prior law enforcement experience or training is required.
  6. Must obtain CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
  7. A valid California Driver License is required, with insurability through the Tribe.
  8. Preferred qualifications include a degree in Administration of Justice or equivalent certification.
  9. Demonstrated ability to interact fairly and respectfully with community members.
  10. Knowledge of law enforcement techniques is essential.
  11. Ability to respond effectively in emergencies and resolve conflicts.
  12. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  13. Excellent interpersonal skills, including patience and respect, are necessary.
  14. Must meet the physical demands of the position.
  15. Health vaccinations may be required based on interactions.
  16. Professionalism and respect towards all community members are mandatory.
  17. Availability for extended hours as needed.
  18. Acceptable work history if previously employed by the Tribe.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience in Tribal Government is advantageous.

DRUG SCREENING

All potential employees must successfully complete a drug screening prior to employment. The Tribe adheres to federal laws, prohibiting marijuana use on trust land.

BACKGROUND CHECK

Candidates will undergo criminal and character background checks, including fingerprinting, prior to hiring.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Maintaining confidentiality is critical for this position and breaches may result in immediate termination.

INDIAN PREFERENCE

Preference is given to qualified Native American candidates in hiring decisions, following established guidelines.
