POSITION SUMMARY
The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of public safety for its community members and visitors. The Tribal Police Department plays a crucial role in enforcing tribal regulations and relevant federal laws within the reservation, collaborating with various law enforcement entities to foster a secure environment. The department prides itself on its strong rapport with the community, actively engaging with residents and visitors to promote safety and awareness.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct regular patrols throughout the community and properties owned by the Shingle Springs Band to deter and identify criminal activity, maintain public order, and respond to emergencies.
- Address community requests for police assistance and outreach initiatives.
- Develop familiarity with local routes, roads, and community dynamics.
- Coordinate search and rescue operations as needed.
- Investigate suspicious activities and disturbances, applying established law enforcement protocols.
- Conduct interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects during investigations.
- Collect and secure evidence from crime scenes.
- Provide first aid and public safety support during emergencies.
- Examine the causes and consequences of traffic incidents within the reservation.
- Assist external agencies in maintaining law and order during crises or natural disasters.
- Serve as a Bailiff during Tribal Court proceedings.
- Manage traffic flow during both planned and spontaneous events.
- Utilize police communication and technology to gather and disseminate information.
- Participate in community meetings to address crime prevention strategies and issues, offering solutions as appropriate.
- Document incidents, investigations, and activities through detailed reports.
- Provide testimony in tribal court regarding evidence and observations.
- Become well-versed in the Tribal Code, applicable ordinances, and other relevant laws and regulations.
- Promote a safe work environment by adhering to safety policies and procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- Ability to successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
- Willingness to undergo a polygraph examination.
- Prior law enforcement experience or training is required.
- Must obtain and maintain CPR certification within thirty days of hire.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and insurability through the Tribe is necessary.
- Preferred qualifications include a degree in Administration of Justice or relevant certification.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain impartiality and fairness in all duties.
- Knowledge of law enforcement techniques that enhance community safety.
- Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and manage community interactions.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a focus on patience and respect.
- Must meet the essential functions of the job classification.
- Compliance with health vaccination requirements may be necessary.
- Professional demeanor and respect towards all community members are expected.
- Flexibility to work extended hours when required.
- Acceptable work history if previously employed by the Shingle Springs Rancheria.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience within Tribal Government is preferred.
DRUG SCREENING
All prospective employees must successfully complete a drug screening prior to employment. The Tribe adheres to federal regulations regarding substance use, and marijuana is prohibited on tribal land.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Candidates will undergo criminal background checks and fingerprinting as part of the hiring process. Verification of previous employment and education will also be conducted.

Maintaining confidentiality is critical for this position and breaches may result in immediate termination.
INDIAN PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring will be given to qualified applicants, with Native American candidates receiving priority when qualifications are comparable.
