SUMMARY

This role is designed to support the execution of the Environmental Program at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, implementing necessary actions to mitigate or eliminate potential environmental hazards while ensuring adherence to relevant laws and regulations. The individual in this position aids in the formulation and coordination of environmental initiatives and projects that align with the company's compliance objectives. Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Engineering, the incumbent will organize their activities within established management frameworks and operate under general supervision, adhering to established protocols. The work will be evaluated upon completion for technical soundness and overall effectiveness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

The incumbent will plan and oversee environmental initiatives and projects of standard scope under the guidance of an Environmental Engineering Specialist. Responsibilities may include:
  • Assisting in the planning, development, and execution of programs, policies, and procedures aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the company's operations.
  • Supporting the development, implementation, and coordination of compliance programs related to hazardous materials/waste management, waste minimization, air quality control, and wastewater management; providing related training to facility staff.
  • Gaining familiarity with the permitting processes for all regulatory agencies governing the company's activities and assisting in obtaining and maintaining necessary permits.
  • Staying informed about current trends in environmental legislation to assess their relevance and implications for the company.
  • Acting as a representative of the company during inspections and at meetings with local, state, and national regulatory bodies, as well as various technical and community organizations concerning environmental issues.
  • Assisting in the administration of all monitoring and reporting required by environmental regulations and permits, which may involve establishing sampling and analysis protocols, compiling and evaluating data, and preparing necessary reports.
The incumbent is expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to their responsibilities, keeping the Manager of Environmental Engineering informed about work progress and any potential challenges.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

This position necessitates a solid understanding of Environmental Engineering principles and techniques, typically acquired through an Associate of Science degree and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, with a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of experience preferred. The incumbent must possess a fundamental knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to effectively engage with regulatory bodies and present information to various levels of company management. Attention to detail and a sense of responsibility are crucial for this role.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is conducted in both outdoor shipyard settings and office environments. Specific vision capabilities required for this role include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regular tasks involve sitting, using hands and fingers to operate a computer, and communicating verbally and in writing. The role requires physical mobility across various areas of the shipyard, including shipboard activities, with the ability to ascend/descend stairs or ladders, navigate uneven surfaces, and access confined spaces. Physical dexterity is necessary for bending and reaching, and the incumbent must remain vigilant and adhere to all safety protocols.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may occasionally be exposed to dust, fumes, and smoke. The role may require spending up to 25% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment across various weather conditions. Noise levels in office settings are generally low to moderate, while the outdoor shipyard environment may experience moderate to high noise levels, including sounds from machinery and construction activities.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Successful execution of tasks and contribution of innovative ideas will enhance the quality, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness of the Environmental Program at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company.

PAY SCALE

Environmental Engineer: $76,200 - $101,200

Senior Environmental Engineer: $95,500 - $126,500

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role, considering various factors such as skill sets, experience, training, and education.
