Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Environmental Project Coordinator to engage with regulatory bodies and stakeholders, including the USEPA and California State Water Board, to enhance underground storage tank (UST) leak prevention programs. This role will focus on ensuring compliance for UST facilities, including the potential removal of non-compliant tanks. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with state agencies to develop strategies that encourage facility owners and operators to adhere to regulations. Additionally, this individual will manage their own workload and oversee a small team of UST Specialists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a subject matter expert on UST systems, regulations, and inspection protocols.
  • Conduct inspections of UST facilities and represent the State Water Board during compliance checks.
  • Evaluate abandoned UST sites to assess environmental risks.
  • Serve as a liaison among local regulatory agencies, the State Water Board, and the U.S. EPA to facilitate the closure of illegally abandoned UST facilities.
  • Oversee project deliverables and timelines for UST Leak Prevention initiatives, ensuring high-quality outputs from the team.
  • Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for team members, reviewing documentation and correspondence for quality assurance.
  • Organize stakeholder meetings to discuss program challenges and solutions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to devise new initiatives that advance the UST Leak Prevention Program's objectives.
  • Create training materials and guidance on UST regulations and compliance for various audiences.
  • Draft communications to inform tank system owners about closure deadlines and available funding assistance.
  • Engage with owners of abandoned UST facilities to explore financial assistance options and develop tailored strategies for case resolution.
  • Maintain tracking systems for correspondence and compliance deadlines.
  • Conduct research to locate contact information for facility owners and assess site conditions.
  • Analyze files and data to identify responsible parties for abandoned UST sites.
  • Prepare progress reports and updates on program achievements.
  • Implement process improvements and enhance documentation for internal use.
  • Facilitate communication between staff, grant applicants, and local agencies.
  • Assist property owners with funding application processes and track application statuses.
  • Utilize environmental databases to monitor UST system data and changes.
  • Support local agencies in meeting state reporting requirements.
  • Conduct public presentations on leak prevention topics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, geology, or a related discipline.
  • Proficient knowledge of UST components, regulations, and monitoring techniques.
  • Three to four years of relevant experience, including regulatory engagement.
  • Strong project management skills in dynamic environments.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and compliance standards.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current ICC CA UST Inspector Certification.
  • Completion of 40-hour HAZWOPER Training.
  • Project Management training and pursuit of PMP certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform essential job functions, including walking, sitting, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Work primarily in an office setting with occasional fieldwork.
  • Compliance with safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment during field activities.
