This role within our communications division emphasizes media relations: advocating for scientific advancements from our esteemed journals and clinical guidelines, overseeing the media center at Digestive Disease Week, the premier event for gastroenterologists globally, and staying informed about the latest developments in the dynamic field of digestive health. Consider topics such as colon cancer screening, innovative treatments for gastrointestinal disorders, the gut microbiome, initiatives to address health equity, and supporting policies that ensure patient access to care.

You will also be tasked with various communications initiatives and the promotion of content to healthcare professionals and researchers. Familiarity with social media platforms, content management systems, email marketing tools, design software, and presentation applications will be advantageous.

AGA INSTITUTE POSITION OVERVIEW

POSITION TITLE: Manager, Communications & Media Relations

REPORTS TO: Senior Director, Communications

SUMMARY: Become a key member of a creative, supportive, and results-oriented communications team. This position will serve as AGA's primary media liaison, responsible for engaging with journalists and devising strategies to foster relationships with the media, thereby enhancing AGA's media presence. This role will also involve planning and executing promotional campaigns aimed at both members and the public for AGA content. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of success in media relations, possess exceptional oral and written communication skills, exhibit a commitment to achieving positive outcomes, and maintain a proactive and optimistic approach.

Key Responsibilities

Media Relations

  1. Act as the main internal contact between AGA and the media for both proactive and reactive inquiries.
  2. Compose press releases, media alerts, and pitches for journalists regarding AGA's scientific work, guidelines, events, and positions.
  3. Build and sustain relationships with journalists, expanding our media contact database.
  4. Manage a speakers' bureau of physician representatives.
  5. Supervise the public relations agency responsible for the Digestive Disease Week (DDW) Newsroom.
  6. Track, monitor, and promote media coverage, sharing significant placements with the team and the public.
Communications

  1. Develop and execute promotional strategies to highlight AGA's scientific research, clinical guidance, and member resources.
  2. Create newsletter articles, web content, email blasts, and social media updates.
  3. Update the website with new information using the content management system.
  4. Assist team members with content creation, email campaigns, video projects, social media initiatives, and other assignments as needed.
  5. Establish and implement methods for tracking and assessing the effectiveness and impact of communication strategies for designated projects.
  6. Provide proofreading support, reviewing documents prior to public release for style, grammar, clarity, and length.
Qualifications

  1. Experience in health, medical, or scientific communication.
  2. Strong media relations background with demonstrated success in securing news coverage. Agency experience is a plus.
  3. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication abilities.
  4. Meticulous attention to detail along with strong organizational and writing skills.
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and media platforms (e.g., MuckRack).
  6. Capability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
