Role Summary

The Student Support Specialist plays a vital role in facilitating each scholar's academic journey by providing essential support in classrooms, study halls, and through individualized tutoring. This position also serves as the primary substitute teacher on-site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the classroom and study hall to provide academic support during designated times.
  • Collaborate with scholars in computer-based classes tailored to their individual schedules.
  • Engage with students in specialized pull-out classes as necessary.
  • Step in as a substitute teacher to support the instructional team when required.
  • Participate as an active member of the Instructional Team and attend all relevant meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (mandatory).
  • Experience working with youth in educational settings.
  • Strong ability to inspire and collaborate within a team environment.
  • Critical and analytical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities.

Site Overview

The Youth Services Center (YSC) serves as the District of Columbia's secure detention facility for youth, providing care and custody for those placed there by court order. Our mission is to cultivate a safe and nurturing atmosphere that encourages each student to achieve their academic and career aspirations.
