Position Summary
This role is crucial in ensuring that students with special educational or emotional requirements receive appropriate support to thrive in the most inclusive and least restrictive settings. The position is based in a juvenile detention facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with general education instructors to implement IEP accommodations and adjust lesson plans to cater to diverse learning needs.
- Partner with school leadership to deliver professional development in special education for faculty.
- Engage with families, educational professionals, and external service providers as necessary.
- Instruct content area classes utilizing a co-teaching model.
- Manage a caseload of students with IEPs, including data collection, system updates, and IEP maintenance.
- Act as the primary contact for families, students, and staff regarding instructional matters, including:
- Monitoring student progress, attendance, and factors influencing academic success, while communicating updates to families and educators.
- Coordinating with classroom teachers, counselors, and specialists on student accommodations and instructional support.
- Addressing family inquiries and concerns related to IEP implementation and educational programs.
- Serving as an advocate and mentor for students.
- Participate in SPED Team and Instructional Team meetings.
- Report to the special education coordinator to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Handle administrative tasks with professionalism and integrity.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in education or a related field (required).
- Certification by DC OSSE in the relevant content area is required within one year of employment.
- Experience working with justice-involved or at-risk youth is preferred.
- Knowledge of research-based instructional strategies is advantageous.
Site Overview
The Youth Services Center (YSC) serves as the District of Columbia's detention facility for youth, ensuring the care and custody of young individuals placed in secure detention by court order.
