Senior Research Director, Development and Advancement

The University of Southern California (USC) is seeking an accomplished professional to fill the role of Senior Research Director, Development and Advancement. This position is a key part of the University Advancement team, responsible for supporting the University's fundraising priorities through specialized background research and due diligence. Reporting to the Director, Development Research, Health Sciences, the successful candidate will operate as a research leader for assigned priorities, conducting complex research and providing reports/briefings to best equip development officers and other stakeholders with the tools to advance fundraising initiatives.

This is a hybrid position under our current work arrangement plan, with the expectation of an on-site presence in our downtown Los Angeles office (USC Tower).

Responsibilities of the Senior Research Director, Development and Advancement include:

  • Serving as a research lead for fundraising partners on research requests and prospecting aligned with USC's fundraising priorities.
  • Providing guidance, expertise, and coaching to junior research staff while serving as a lead researcher for assigned units and identifying/recommending areas for improvement.
  • Partnering with leaders and cross-campus stakeholders to support special prospecting projects.
  • Composing detailed research materials on prospects and assign estimated gift capacity ratings based on comprehensive wealth analysis.
  • Producing briefings for senior university officials for events, dinners, and other interactions with important donors and prospects.
  • Assisting in broad prospect screenings for the identification of new prospects and the qualification of existing ones, and with other projects related to growing and refining the prospect pipeline.
  • Partnering with fundraisers and colleagues in Relationship Management to analyze and refine portfolios.
  • Ensuring adherence to ethical development research practices and applicable data privacy laws and regulations, including but not limited to FERPA, GDPR, and HIPAA.

The minimum education requirement for this position is a Bachelor's degree. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience in development research, prospect management, or prospect development in a higher education, healthcare, or complex non-profit environment. A Master's degree is preferred, and the ideal candidate will have 5 years of experience in supervisory roles. The salary for this position is $95,000 - $105,000.
