Advanced Electric Distribution System Planning and Analysis Researcher

Job Summary

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced researcher to join our Strategic Energy Analysis and Decision Sciences (SEADS) directorate. As a researcher in our distribution systems team, you will play a key role in advancing our understanding of electric distribution systems and their role in a dynamic and evolving energy landscape.

Our team works closely with distribution utilities, regulators, and government entities across the U.S. and internationally to develop and analyze future grid scenarios that answer critical questions about how the electric grid is transforming. We are seeking a researcher who can contribute to our ongoing research and analysis, including integrated distribution planning, advanced solar and load hosting capacity analyses, grid interconnection planning, and capacity expansion of distribution systems.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, data science, or a related field, and experience in at least one of the following areas: renewable integration, distribution system analysis, distribution system planning, distributed energy resources, energy storage, building and vehicle electrification, flexible loads, and resilience analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis on electric distribution systems and their role in a dynamic and evolving energy landscape
  • Develop and analyze future grid scenarios that answer critical questions about how the electric grid is transforming
  • Collaborate with distribution utilities, regulators, and government entities across the U.S. and internationally
  • Contribute to ongoing research and analysis, including integrated distribution planning, advanced solar and load hosting capacity analyses, grid interconnection planning, and capacity expansion of distribution systems
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and partners

Requirements

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, data science, or a related field
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: renewable integration, distribution system analysis, distribution system planning, distributed energy resources, energy storage, building and vehicle electrification, flexible loads, and resilience analysis
  • Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and collaborative team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, data science, or a related field
  • Experience with power-flow modeling, optimization, machine-learning, capacity modeling, forecasting techniques, statistical analysis, and data analysis
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R
