The Princeton University Art Museum is seeking six Project Collections Associates to support the museum's collection team with various tasks related to the reinstallation of the university's art collection. These positions will be engaged in onsite activities during standard business hours, five days a week, as the museum prepares for its upcoming transformation.
About the Museum:
Established in 1755, the Princeton University Art Museum is recognized as one of the premier university art museums in the nation, housing over 115,000 works of art that span from ancient to contemporary periods. The museum plays a vital role in supporting the University's educational and research objectives while serving as a cultural hub for visitors globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Audit and Manage Art Collection: Conduct thorough audits of art objects, generating checklists from the museum database and accurately identifying artworks in storage.
- Collaborate with Art Handlers: Work alongside a team of art handlers to facilitate the movement of art objects, ensuring proper handling and documentation.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of location changes in the museum database and label containers as necessary.
Shipping Oversight:
- Verify the contents of shipping containers and manage the staging of packed and unpacked crates.
- Create and maintain shipping records within the museum database.
Condition Monitoring:
- Examine art objects for condition changes, capturing digital images as needed and notifying conservators of any concerns.
Qualifications
Essential Requirements:
- Two to three years of experience in a relevant role within a museum or cultural institution.
- Knowledge of Visual Art or Art History, with equivalent experience considered.
- Familiarity with various fine art media and terminology.
- Understanding of best practices for art handling and care.
- Proficient in digital file management and computer usage.
- Physical capability to perform tasks that involve standing, walking, and lifting.
- Strong teamwork skills and a collegial attitude.
- Adaptability to changing work environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Art Conservation, or Studio Arts.
