Position Overview

Role Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior System Safety Engineer to join our team at First Tek, Inc. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of our products developed for defense applications.

The Senior System Safety Engineer (SSE) will be tasked with employing comprehensive safety analysis methodologies to assess the safety of end items and their subsystems. This position requires expertise in conducting hazard analyses in alignment with established standards and contractual obligations.

The SSE will evaluate and recommend safety features and controls in system design, software, training, and operational procedures to effectively mitigate or eliminate potential hazards. Additionally, the SSE will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of safety documentation to meet both customer and contractual requirements.

Collaboration with systems and software engineering teams is essential, as the SSE will contribute to architecture definition, use case development, and the generation of software safety analyses in accordance with governmental guidelines.

We expect the Senior SSE to work autonomously with minimal supervision, leveraging their professional experience and educational background while also mentoring and guiding junior engineers in the System Safety domain.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute hazard analyses, software safety assessments, and hazardous material management plans.
  • Assess and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations during technical reviews and customer briefings.
  • Communicate system safety requirements to suppliers and verify their implementation in design.
  • Assist in the development and verification of requirements.
  • Review specifications, technical documentation, and design modifications for impacts on system safety.
  • Support customer and operational range requirements.
  • Engage in the development of testing activities to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
  • Prepare technical documentation and presentation materials for independent safety board meetings to secure approval on system designs.
  • Participate in investigations of incidents involving product or facility damage, assisting in identifying causes and corrective actions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing a System Safety Program in accordance with MIL-STD-882.
  • Expertise in developing and evaluating system safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with implementing a Software Safety Program in accordance with AOP-52 and DoD guidelines.
  • In-depth knowledge of MIL-STD-882 and its associated analyses.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver formal presentations to large audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment with engineers, suppliers, program managers, and customers.

  • Experience with DOORS requirements application.

  • Able to learn and utilize System Safety-specific software tools.
