Position Overview:
The Senior Safety Systems Engineer (SSE) plays a crucial role in guaranteeing that the products created and delivered to clients are secure for operational use.

Key Responsibilities:
The SSE will utilize safety assessment methodologies to evaluate the final product and its components. The primary focus will be conducting hazard assessments in alignment with established safety standards and contractual obligations.

The SSE will also analyze and propose safety measures and controls for system architecture, software, training, and operational procedures to mitigate or eliminate potential risks.

In addition, the SSE will assist in the creation of safety documentation to meet both client and contractual specifications.

The ideal candidate will collaborate with systems and software engineering teams on architectural definitions and use cases, generating software safety evaluations in accordance with governmental regulations.

Expectations:
The SSE is expected to operate autonomously with minimal supervision, drawing on professional experience and educational qualifications, while also mentoring and guiding junior safety engineers in the field of System Safety.

Additional Duties May Include:

  • Supporting program initiatives by developing hazard evaluations, software safety reviews, and hazardous material management strategies.
  • Assessing and recommending safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations at technical reviews and client briefings.
  • Translating system safety requirements to suppliers and ensuring design compliance.
  • Assisting in the development and verification of requirements.
  • Reviewing specifications, technical documents, and design modifications for implications on system safety.
  • Supporting client and operational testing requirements.
  • Participating in the formulation of testing activities to ensure safety criteria are met.
  • Creating technical documentation and presentation materials for independent safety board meetings to secure approval on system designs.
  • Engaging in accident investigations related to product damage or facility issues and aiding in identifying causes and corrective measures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in developing and executing a System Safety Program in accordance with established safety standards.
  • Expertise in formulating and assessing system safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with implementing a Software Safety Program following governmental guidelines.
  • Proficient understanding of safety standards and associated analyses.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to deliver formal presentations to large audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment with engineers, suppliers, program managers, and clients.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in supporting independent government Safety Review Boards.
  • Knowledge of Human Factors Engineering.
  • Familiarity with missile and launcher systems.
  • Understanding of model-based engineering principles.
  • Experience with requirements management tools.
  • Self-motivated individual capable of executing tasks with minimal guidance.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Able to learn and utilize System Safety-specific software tools.
