Emeryville, California, United States LBL Full time

The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBL) is seeking a Lead Power Conversion Engineer to enhance our team.

This role involves overseeing the entire system life cycle of power conversion systems for electro-magnets, which may operate in either pulsed or continuous modes, with power outputs ranging from several watts to approximately 0.5 MW average.

The selected engineer will engage in design tasks, project planning, and execution, collaborating closely with the Lead Power Supply Electronics Engineer, project managers, and other engineers and scientists primarily within the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division, while also liaising with the ALS-U Project, various divisions, and the broader accelerator community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research, development, testing, and deployment of power supplies and associated controllers, ensuring high stability, reliability, and efficiency across DC and pulsed power systems.
  • Design and maintain power supply test setups, creating comprehensive testing protocols, including PID control loop tuning.
  • Engineer highly stable and reliable unipolar and bipolar power supplies.
  • Evaluate power supply reliability and formulate maintenance strategies based on Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) for power electronics and related hardware, including the design of pulsed magnetics using finite element analysis and circuit simulations.
  • In collaboration with the Lead Power Supply Electronics Engineer, manage the product life cycle for development and upgrade initiatives, including:
    • Defining project scope and developing actionable plans.
    • Conducting systems analysis and establishing requirements.
    • Creating system designs, performing development work, and testing prototypes.
    • Overseeing the production and installation of power conversion systems, while providing operational support and maintenance.
    • Networking with key stakeholders across various technical domains (accelerator physics, magnet design, controls, facilities engineering) to develop specifications for high stability power supplies.
    • Presenting findings at design reviews for ALS development and upgrade projects.
    • Maintaining thorough documentation of power electronics equipment.
    • Coordinating cost and schedule estimates for power electronics projects in partnership with the Lead Power Supply Electronics Engineer.
    • Occasional travel may be required for reviews, vendor visits, and participation in conferences and workshops.
    • Contributing to the development of electrical safety protocols for high voltage, current, and energy devices.
Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years with a Master's degree; or equivalent experience.
  • At least 6 years of experience in power electronics, power supply, or pulsed power research and development or design.
  • Proven experience in the design, development, testing, and installation of pulsed power, power electronic, high-voltage, or high-current systems.
  • Strong technical understanding and experience in power conversion engineering, demonstrating innovative solutions to diverse challenges.
  • Technical knowledge in several of the following areas:
    • High voltage, high current, and high frequency switching.
    • High stability, high accuracy, and tightly regulated power converters.
    • Magnet systems and inductive loads, including under ramping or pulsed profiles.
    • Circuit design utilizing power electronic devices such as BJTs, MOSFETs, and IGBTs.
    • Integration of equipment into complex systems.
    • Single-phase and poly-phase AC circuits and power distribution.
    • Communication and feedback control theory, including PID controllers.
    • Familiarity with electrical codes and safety standards such as NEC, LOTO, and NFPA 70E.
    • Experience with Electrical CAD tools for schematic capture and PCB layout.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with analog, logic, and mixed-signal circuit design, analysis, and simulation.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design CAD modeling tools.
  • Experience with electromagnetic analysis using FEA simulation codes.
  • Knowledge of thermal analysis and design, utilizing multiphysics FEA simulation tools.
  • Programming skills in MATLAB, FPGA languages, C/C++, and Visual Basic.
Salary Range:

The expected salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt from overtime pay.
  • The position may require a background check.
  • LBL is committed to fostering an inclusive environment and encourages applications from diverse backgrounds.
