Position Overview
The Lead Scientist in Bioprocess Engineering will play a crucial role in advancing the scale-up of innovative platforms for cultivated meat production. This position requires a blend of scientific acumen and operational experience, providing technical guidance across development labs, pilot operations, and cGMP manufacturing scales. We seek a proactive individual who thrives in both laboratory and office environments to contribute to our expanding team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to implement bioprocesses that facilitate technology transfers and manufacturing support.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee technology transfer initiatives and provide technical assistance for production processes, including managing on-site support as part of the Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT) team within Bioprocess Engineering.
- Design, conduct, and evaluate experiments from bench to pilot scale, leading to process transfers for commercial scale and manufacturing support.
- Drive the assessment, development, and integration of new manufacturing technologies.
- Lead the scale-up of new processes, including the selection, installation, and evaluation of bioreactor technologies and the formulation of operating procedures.
- Serve as the technical expert for large-scale animal cell bioprocesses.
- Guide and mentor junior team members to achieve project objectives.
- Assist with regulatory submissions and facility startup as necessary.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in mammalian cell culture bioprocess development and process transfer across various scales in both academic and industrial environments.
- Advanced degrees are preferred, with relevant industrial experience in cell biology, molecular biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or related life sciences fields.
- Experience with cGMP operations and/or pilot plant operations, including at least 5 years in a management role overseeing teams focused on process development and/or technology transfer.
- Proven experience in leading the development and/or technology transfer of upstream bioreactor operations, such as fed-batch or perfusion, with animal or mammalian suspension cells at large scale.
- Expertise in the development of new bioprocesses and their transfer to production, including bioreactor scale-up and scale-down techniques.
- Strong interpersonal skills to engage with individuals at all organizational levels, including diverse cultures.
- A collaborative mindset, comfortable working and mentoring in a team-oriented environment.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
- Familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Minitab) for statistical analysis and data presentation.
The Bioprocess Engineering team, particularly the MSAT subgroup, collaborates with all facets of R&D, Bioprocess Engineering, and Manufacturing. This role will involve working with stakeholders across the organization to design studies and manage the transfer of materials and data.
Initial Year Contributions
- Collaborate within the MSAT subgroup of Bioprocess Engineering to facilitate technology transfer and support large-scale bioprocess operations.
- Streamline technology transfer workflows.
- Provide dedicated manufacturing support.
- Enable testing of current processes at bench and pilot scales prior to technology transfer to commercial scales.
- Establish a dedicated pilot-scale suspension production function to support Food R&D prototyping efforts.
