About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Electronics Engineer - Instrumentation Specialist to join our team at UMass Amherst. As a key member of our Chemistry Department, you will be responsible for maintaining and developing resources essential to our teaching and research facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex electronics instrumentation and related mechanical equipment.
  • Design, fabricate, install, and calibrate instruments as necessary.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot autoclaves, coordinate repairs to environmental growth chambers.
  • Prioritize and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Communicate with directors and vendors to coordinate equipment installation or service.
  • Participate in requisitioning parts and supplies within Departmental guidelines.
  • Maintain laboratory safety profiles and develop instructions for equipment usage.
  • Supervise student workers and ensure safe equipment usage.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field, plus at least five years of experience in computerized instrumentation or similar electronics.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneumatics for equipment and instrumentation used in scientific research.
  • Basic knowledge of refrigeration cooling systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of analog and digital electronics, including detector and transducer technologies.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic and logic diagrams, specifications, and technical literature.
  • Basic computer networking skills.
  • Ability to work with machine shop equipment and tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with state electrical code.
  • Experience working in a teaching and/or research lab environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of vacuum systems and vacuum pumps.
  • Experience with autoclave sterilizers.
  • Experience with designing and manufacturing prototype research/teaching/support apparatus.
Work Environment

This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm, with occasional off-hours support for emergencies and some weekend hours may be required.
