Head of Student Admissions and Middle School Initiatives

NAFSA is dedicated to fostering the next generation of leaders, advocates, and educators by providing access to higher education for talented students who have been historically underrepresented. Our comprehensive program supports students from middle school through their transition to college, ensuring they are well-prepared for their academic journeys.
NAFSA's tuition-free initiative offers year-round academic support, counseling, and advocacy for a diverse group of students, many of whom are first-generation college aspirants from under-resourced backgrounds. Our unique model empowers high school and college students to gain invaluable experience in the K-12 education system, enabling them to design and teach classes under the guidance of experienced educators.
The Role
As the Head of Student Admissions and Middle School Initiatives, you will be responsible for the strategic execution of our academic programs, which lay the groundwork for students' college aspirations beginning in middle school. You will also manage the annual recruitment and admissions cycle, identifying and enrolling new students while collaborating with educational leaders and community partners.
Your leadership will extend to managing a dedicated team, including program staff and AmeriCorps members, focusing on developing and implementing effective recruitment strategies, creating engaging program content, and ensuring alignment with our high school initiatives.
As part of the leadership team, you will contribute to shaping our organizational culture and strategic direction, translating our vision into impactful programs that meet the evolving needs of our students and their communities.
Key Responsibilities
Student Recruitment and Admissions
- Design and implement effective recruitment strategies to achieve application and enrollment goals for the Middle School program.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners, school administrators, and educators to identify and recruit prospective students.
- Utilize data-driven approaches to monitor and enhance admissions strategies.
- Train staff and volunteers to support the recruitment process, including conducting presentations and interviews.
- Select and prepare the incoming class of students for successful onboarding into the program.
- Lead the planning and execution of our signature Middle School Summer Program and After-School initiatives.
- Engage families through personalized conferences and educational opportunities during the Middle School years.
- Oversee the implementation of individualized student advising, ensuring staff are trained and equipped to provide effective support.
- Align all programming with NAFSA's strategic objectives and operational plans.
- Collaborate with leadership to establish metrics for program impact and success.
- Oversee data collection and analysis to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Develop and nurture relationships with external organizations to enhance NAFSA's visibility and impact.
- Represent NAFSA at community and professional events, sharing insights and successes.
- Assist in gathering testimonials and success stories to highlight the effectiveness of our programs.
- Work with the Development Team to create volunteer opportunities that support student success.
- Support fundraising efforts and board-related activities as needed.
- 7+ years of leadership experience in youth development, education, or nonprofit sectors focused on college access.
- Understanding of the challenges faced by first-generation college students and their communities.
- Experience in developing engaging programming for middle school students.
- Knowledge of the higher education landscape and strategies for supporting first-gen students.
- Proven ability to build relationships and develop student pipelines.
- Strong communication skills and comfort in public speaking.
- Familiarity with program evaluation practices and data analysis.
- Experience managing teams and fostering professional development.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

- This is a full-time, exempt position.
