Position Overview

Atrium Health University City operates with 9 Operating Rooms and is situated conveniently near a major campus. We provide self-scheduling options with flexible shifts and minimal on-call hours. Although this facility is not a trauma center, it offers a variety of specialized service lines, including Orthopedics, Robotic Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, and Gynecology. We take pride in being the only Atrium facility recognized with the AORN Go Clear designation for maintaining a smoke-free environment by effectively managing surgical smoke plume. Our team is small and closely-knit, often engaging in team-building activities such as potlucks, fostering a supportive work atmosphere. We collaborate with an exceptional group of surgeons who value teamwork and communication, making Atrium Health University City an ideal setting for those who prioritize relationships and quality patient care.

Job Responsibilities:

Utilizes advanced surgical technology expertise to assist in delivering patient care within the surgical suite while ensuring a safe working environment and fulfilling all related duties. Maintains high standards of patient care throughout surgical procedures and vigilantly safeguards the sterile field.

Key Duties:

  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of aseptic techniques and their application.
  • Assists in the preparation and organization of supplies and instruments before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Supports the Registered Nurse circulator in patient preparation, assembly of supplies, instruments, equipment, and proper handling of specimens; assists with all aspects of room turnover.
  • Performs tasks in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitors surgical supplies for sterility prior to use and ensures judicious use of supplies, accurately documenting charges.
  • Tracks and records sterilization activities to ensure completion.
  • Participates in in-services and staff meetings; stays informed on current departmental issues and engages in the Performance Improvement Process.
  • Seeks educational opportunities to enhance skills and meet personal development goals.
  • Contributes to the formulation of policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Acts as a preceptor and clinical resource for colleagues.
  • Takes responsibility for specific clinical projects as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

This position involves occasional exposure to noise and environmental conditions such as dust, fumes, and chemicals. Effective communication and writing skills are necessary. The role requires physical stamina, including walking, stretching, bending, climbing stairs, twisting, and kneeling. Prolonged periods of standing may be necessary. Frequent use of side vision, lifting, pushing, and pulling is required, with the ability to lift and support weights of up to 35 pounds. Manual dexterity is essential for operating equipment and positioning surgical patients. Vision and hearing for distances up to twenty feet are required, along with depth perception and color differentiation.

Education and Experience:

A graduate of an accredited surgical technology program or successful completion of a military training program for Surgical Technology or Operating Room Specialist is required. A minimum of 5 years of experience in an operating room setting as a surgical technologist is essential. Current certification is mandatory. Must meet all qualifications for Surgical Tech III on the Surgical Tech Ladder.
