Position Overview:

The City of Austin's Emergency Medical Services Department is dedicated to providing 9-1-1 emergency medical response across Austin and Travis County, Texas, catering to a diverse population exceeding 2.2 million residents. Our organization stands out as a third service public safety provider, emphasizing emergency medicine, with our Medics recognized as skilled clinicians delivering exceptional patient care in the field. We seek qualified candidates to join our distinguished team of Medics, contributing to transformative healthcare for the community.

New hires commence their journey as Cadets, engaging in a compensated 10-week training academy. Upon successful completion of the academy, Cadets undergo a field training period before being authorized for independent duty as Medics within our system. Our Medics are committed to continuous improvement, whether through practical field experience or a variety of Continuing Education courses offered by the department. Key Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Engaging in the Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services Academy training program, which encompasses daily lectures, laboratory practice, response simulations, live field exercises, physical training, and other orientation activities to prepare for graduation and promotion to EMS Medic - Field.
  • Participating in mandatory physical training, which includes aerobic conditioning, strength training, calisthenics, and other fitness activities.
  • Acquiring knowledge in patient advocacy and interagency collaboration.
  • Developing skills for patient assessment and understanding procedures as outlined by the Medical Director.
  • Learning to document patient care and related reports accurately.
  • Gaining experience in operating emergency vehicles, responding to emergency scenes, and transporting patients to medical facilities.
  • Maintaining a strong focus on safety and adhering to established safety standards and practices.

This position is classified as essential, requiring work during holidays and adverse weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) or higher.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License (or ability to obtain one by the start of the Academy).
  • Texas Department of State Health Services certification as an EMT-Basic or higher (or eligibility for reciprocity if applying from out of state).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of basic pre-hospital emergency medical care and rescue techniques.
  • Familiarity with the operation of medical equipment used in pre-hospital emergency care.
  • Awareness of current principles and practices in emergency medical services, customer service, patient advocacy, and incident management.
  • Knowledge of community health risk factors and resource information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with EMS personnel and other emergency service members.
  • Capability to perform strenuous tasks under various weather conditions, including emergencies.
  • Proficiency in map reading and navigating to call locations under pressure.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to respond swiftly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Competence in managing conflict and uncertainty.
  • Skill in multitasking and prioritizing responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with public safety communications equipment and related software applications.
  • Capacity to recall numerous details and essential information quickly.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Professional communication skills that convey care and concern for patients and their families.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment effectively.
  • Unimpaired mobility for rapid response and patient access in challenging environments.
  • Physical capabilities to perform CPR and manage equipment and patients in various conditions.
  • Basic swimming ability for survival.
  • Motor skills to perform essential medical techniques.
  • Correctable vision for day and night operation of emergency vehicles.
  • Hearing ability to understand patient information and radio communications in active environments.
  • Clear speech for effective communication in high-stress situations.
