Position Overview:

In emergency situations, timely response is crucial. When individuals reach out for assistance, they are often experiencing distress and require immediate support. Communications Medics at The City of Austin - Austin Travis County EMS are the first line of defense, providing essential guidance and reassurance over the phone. If you possess empathy, a caring nature, and exceptional multitasking abilities, this role may be ideal for you. We seek dedicated individuals to deliver this vital service from our advanced Communications center.

All new recruits commence their journey as Cadets, participating in a compensated 10-week training program. Upon successful completion of the academy, Cadets will undergo a field training phase before being authorized for independent duty as a Medic. Our Communications Medics handle emergency calls requiring medical assistance, effectively triaging medical concerns, assessing critical situations, and delivering medical advice and interventions via phone.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Engaging in the Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services Academy training program, which encompasses daily lectures, practical laboratory sessions, response simulations, and various orientation activities to prepare for graduation and advancement to Medic - Communications.
  • Acquiring knowledge to assess appropriate responses for incoming calls, including offering emergency medical self-help through pre-arrival instructions, triaging medical conditions by phone, and pinpointing the caller's location using standardized medical protocols.
  • Developing skills to assist callers by analyzing and determining suitable emergency medical pre-arrival instructions as established by the Medical Director.
  • Learning to operate various communication and computer-based systems utilized in managing 911 medical calls, including dispatching and monitoring EMS Units and helicopter services.
  • Gaining expertise in accurately documenting patient care and related reports.

This role is classified as essential, requiring availability during holidays and adverse weather conditions.

Upon successful completion of the EMS Academy, a Cadet will be certified as a Medic Communications in accordance with local government regulations. After fulfilling the probationary period, the individual will transition to a full civil service employee with comprehensive civil service protections.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Eligible for employment in the United States.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED.
  • Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) or higher.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License (or ability to obtain by the start of the Academy).
  • Certification as an EMT-Basic or higher from the Texas Department of State Health Services (or eligibility for reciprocity if applying from out of state).
  • National Academy of Emergency Dispatch (NAED) Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification within a specified timeframe after hire.
  • American Heart Association CPR Certification within a specified timeframe after hire.

Completion of the credentialing process is required within a designated period from the date of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of emergency medical call-taking procedures.
  • Familiarity with emergency telecommunications operations.
  • Knowledge of primary and secondary streets and highways in the service area.
  • Awareness of various services provided by EMS.
  • Understanding of pre-hospital emergency medical care and rescue techniques.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to respond swiftly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Capability to manage conflict and uncertainty effectively.
  • Skill in multitasking and prioritizing tasks.
  • Proficiency in operating public safety communications equipment and related software.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Capacity to communicate professionally, conveying care and concern for patients and their families.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately gather necessary information.
  • Typing speed of at least 35 WPM with an 80% accuracy rate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to relocate quickly to alternative communication centers or mobile units.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing approximately 20 pounds.
  • Fine motor skills to operate required computer and 911 phone equipment accurately.
  • Correctable vision suitable for operating communication equipment and recognizing alerts.
  • Ability to hear and comprehend information from callers and radio traffic.
  • Clear speech for effective communication with callers and emergency personnel.
