Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Practice Specialist RN to join our team at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and passionate professional to lead efforts in ensuring quality clinical practice and professional development at the front-line.

Key Responsibilities
  • Quality Improvement
    • Develop and implement education opportunities for staff identified through needs assessments, departmental and system goals, and new/expanded clinical programs.
    • Support staff in seeking and maintaining specialty certification, including monitoring progress and completion.
    • Participate in the review of unit/division dashboards through LDOC and assess opportunities to improve in quality and practice areas, developing corresponding actions as needed with key unit/division stakeholders.
    • Monitor and trend quality report data with operational managers for clinical quality/safety issues and develop associated action plans as needed.
    • Lead and facilitate inter-professional teams for unit/division-based and house-wide clinical process improvement.
  • Culture of Safety
    • Plan, implement, and evaluate division-specific learning activities to improve safety, including simulations with support from Professional Practice and Development team members.
    • Unit-based clinical policy and procedure review and updating.
    • Provide input into staff evaluations related to clinical competence (quality and practice).
    • Round on units with the intention of coaching and mentoring.
    • Identify gaps in staff knowledge and skills and remediate.
    • Participate in Staff RN Peer Review processes.
  • Evidence-Based Practice/Research
    • Identify opportunities, mentor, and implement EBP projects, including unit/division order sets and practice guidelines.
    • Identify, mentor, and/or participate in nursing or inter-professional clinical research projects.
    • Assist in interpreting research findings and developing strategies for the implementation of results into evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
  • Shared Leadership
    • Attend Unit-Based Staff Meetings.
    • Attend Unit-Based Shared Leadership meetings (POC) and Clinical Nurse Leadership Council (CNLC) meetings.
    • Attend Unit Leadership (LDOC) meetings.
    • Participate in off-unit committee/project teams as appropriate.
  • Fiscal Stewardship
    • Evaluate new products to make recommendations to the value-based purchasing committee.
    • Make recommendations for improvements in clinical efficiency in partnership with operational managers.
    • Use organizational and unit/department resources efficiently.
    • Manage work schedules efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time.
  • Annual Competency/Orientation/Retention
    • Lead content review and revision for unit-based orientation annually.
    • Actively participate in new employee orientation (PCS Orientation and unit-based orientation).
    • Participate in monitoring new hire goal progress and in touch points/check-ins.
    • Utilize internal and external resources to develop and implement unit's annual competency and annual education plan and maintain records of completion.
    • Collaborate with unit managers to evaluate, on an ongoing basis, progress towards staff completion of education plans.
  • Education
    • Provide informal unit-based education based on unit learning needs assessments.
    • Provide formal classroom instruction and skills assessments, including competency assessments.
    • Enhance educational offerings by incorporating components of the NM Toolkit (Safety, Service, and Leadership), NMI Diversity and Inclusion Resources, and NM Values in Action into content as appropriate.
    • Maintain visibility on all shifts and serve as a resource to off-shift staff.
    • Communicate efficiently and effectively, role-modeling critical-thinking skills and problem-solving skills.
    • Include a focus on 'just-in-time' teaching at the bedside.
  • Leadership
    • Advocate for patients, families, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare community.
    • Assume a leadership role in professional activities and organizations.
    • Serve as a patient advocate and role-model clinical practice that reflects the 'Patients First' philosophy.
    • Assist in the development of policies and procedures in clinical areas of expertise to establish standards for nursing practice.
    • Participate in department and hospital committees and task forces to facilitate changes and develop processes to improve patient care using evidence-based practice guidelines.
    • Consult with nursing and hospital leadership (management) in the identification, evaluation, and problem-solving of clinical system and process issues.
    • Collaborate with NM leadership teams to develop, implement, and evaluate strategic plans for quality improvement initiatives.
    • Collaborate with physicians to lead changes in clinical practice.
    • Collaborate with leaders in academic, political, and financial institutions to promote healthcare reform.
    • Serve as a consultant to the department of nursing in developing strategies for advancing nursing practice and leadership opportunities for nursing.
