Position Overview:

The Clinical Education Specialist plays a pivotal role in enhancing the educational framework within the Cardiac Transplant ICU. This full-time position is structured around a 40-hour work week, organized into four 10-hour shifts.


This role embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, adhering to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program while complying with all relevant policies, procedures, and accreditation standards.


The Clinical Education Specialist is a licensed professional nurse who exemplifies outstanding patient care and is responsible for both formal and informal educational initiatives for staff members.


Working in partnership with the Interprofessional team, NM Academy, colleagues, and the Shared Leadership Committee, the specialist identifies educational needs, formulates and executes educational strategies, and engages in evaluating the effectiveness of learning outcomes.


The Clinical Education Specialist upholds the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Nursing and adheres to the Code of Ethics.


Key Responsibilities:
  1. Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practices, and clinical expertise into educational programs.
  2. Designs, coordinates, implements, and assesses both formal and informal educational opportunities for staff, including nurses, support personnel, and nursing students, accommodating off-shift and weekend schedules.
  3. Facilitates and participates in unit-specific orientation processes in collaboration with NM Academy, colleagues, managers, and the Department of Professional Practice and Development.
  4. Develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates annual unit-specific clinical skills validation and competency assessments.
  5. Oversees mandatory educational activities, ensuring coverage during off-shifts and weekends.
  6. Collaborates with unit leadership to create tailored educational plans for individual staff members.
  7. Maintains practice standards relevant to specific clinical environments.
  8. Partners with NM Academy to assess educational needs and devise effective strategies to address them.
  9. Supports the continuous development of critical thinking skills among clinical nurses.
  10. Provides direct patient care as necessary and serves as a clinical instructor during the orientation and transition phases for new hires.
  11. Creates educational plans in response to proposed practice changes, supporting Nursing Practice and Quality and Safety Committees.
  12. Utilizes established research critique guidelines for evaluating evidence-based literature.
  13. Understands CMS and TJC standards as they pertain to direct patient care.
  14. Develops in-service training in response to quality audits and changes in CMS and TJC standards.
  15. Offers constructive feedback to management regarding staff performance.

Additional Responsibilities:
  1. Engages in unit, departmental, divisional, or hospital committees/task forces as assigned.
  2. Maintains clinical proficiency within the area of expertise.
