Compensation Range
$142,050 - $182,388 Annually for the TSS.3 level
$170,430 - $218,868 Annually for the TSS.4 level
Please note that the compensation range is a general guideline. Numerous factors influence starting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Electric Utility Engineer. In this role, you will engage in a variety of advanced engineering, planning, design, protection, maintenance, operations, construction, and modification tasks related to transmission, substation, and distribution facilities (115kV, 13.8kV, 12kV, and 4kV) serving LLNL's Main Site and Site 300. This position is part of the Electric Utility Division within the Infrastructure Maintenance and Utilities Department.

This role necessitates full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

Your Responsibilities

  • Assess short and long-term electric utility system capability deficiencies by analyzing complex system component capabilities and anticipated load growth. Propose economical and timely solutions for system enhancements to rectify identified deficiencies and uphold LLNL's electric utility systems service reliability and quality objectives.
  • Conduct load-flow studies and economic analyses to support engineering recommendations.
  • Evaluate electric utility system protection requirements and recommend protection schemes for transmission lines, substations, metal-clad switchgear, and distribution circuits. Set and coordinate all protective relays and provide supporting fault-duty studies.
  • Develop and implement maintenance and operational procedures and standards for electric utility system equipment.
  • Review and approve equipment test reports, as-built switchgear drawings, system one-line diagrams, and associated system documentation to ensure system load parameters remain within limits during abnormal circuit configurations.
  • Monitor existing electric utility system parameters and provide engineering recommendations to maintain system integrity within allowable limits.
  • Conduct arc-flash assessments and determine appropriate in-field personal protective equipment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, mid-level management, and customer representatives on matters requiring cross-organizational coordination.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities for TSS.4 Level

  • Lead technical teams in creating detailed engineering designs and construction packages for electric utility system equipment upgrades and replacements.
  • Oversee project coordination and provide construction oversight for Electric Utility Division projects.
  • Facilitate the review process for site-wide electric utility systems projects from initial concept through construction, ensuring compliance with design, code conformance, safety, environmental standards, equipment specifications, and acceptance testing specifications.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (power systems concentration) or an equivalent combination of education and related experience, with the ability to obtain professional registration as an Electrical Engineer in California or through reciprocity from another state within 12 months.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in electric utility substation and distribution system engineering, maintenance, and operations; ability to interpret electric utility system drawings; familiarity with California Public Utility Commission General Orders and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Proficient in electric utility system analysis software and experienced in conducting engineering economic studies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience using AutoCAD for design drawings.
  • Significant experience in electric utility system safety practices in accordance with relevant codes and company policies.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and present technical information to management.
  • Self-motivated to enhance work practices for personal and departmental improvement.

Additional Qualifications for TSS.4 Level

  • Required professional registration as an Electrical Engineer in California or another state.
  • Extensive experience in preparing engineering designs and construction packages for electric utility system upgrades.
  • Expertise in communication and collaboration necessary to interact with all levels of personnel and provide guidance on electric utility system engineering and operations.
  • Significant experience in project coordination and construction oversight.
  • Proven ability to work independently and lead teams to achieve strategic objectives.

Security Clearance Requirements
