Compensation Range
$142,050 - $182,388 Annually for the TSS.3 level
$170,430 - $218,868 Annually for the TSS.4 level
Please note that the compensation range is a general guideline. Several factors, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity, influence starting pay.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Electric Utility Engineer to engage in a range of advanced engineering, planning, design, protection, maintenance, operations, construction, and modification tasks related to transmission, substation, and distribution facilities. This role is situated within the Electric Utility Division of the Infrastructure Maintenance and Utilities Department.
This position may be filled at either level based on the candidate's knowledge and relevant experience as evaluated by the hiring team. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
Due to the nature of the work, this position requires full-time on-site presence.
Your Responsibilities
- Evaluate electric utility system capability deficiencies by analyzing complex system components and projected load growth. Propose timely and cost-effective solutions for system enhancements to address identified deficiencies and uphold LLNL's service reliability and quality objectives.
- Conduct load-flow and economic studies to support engineering recommendations.
- Assess electric utility system protection needs and recommend protection schemes for transmission lines, substations, and distribution circuits. Set and coordinate protective relays and perform supporting fault-duty analyses.
- Develop and implement maintenance and operational procedures and standards for electric utility systems.
- Review and validate equipment test reports, as-built drawings, system one-line diagrams, and switching orders to ensure compliance with load parameters during abnormal configurations.
- Monitor existing system parameters and provide engineering recommendations to maintain operational limits.
- Conduct arc-flash assessments and determine necessary personal protective equipment.
- Collaborate with colleagues, mid-level management, and customer representatives on cross-organizational matters.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities for TSS.4 Level
- Lead technical teams in creating detailed engineering designs and construction packages for electric utility system upgrades and replacements.
- Oversee project coordination and provide construction oversight for Electric Utility Division initiatives.
- Guide the review process for site-wide electric utility projects from concept through construction, ensuring compliance with design standards and safety regulations.
Qualifications
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (with a focus on power systems) or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with the ability to achieve professional registration as an Electrical Engineer in California or through reciprocity within 12 months.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in electric utility substation and distribution system engineering, maintenance, and operations.
- Proficiency in using electric utility system analysis software and performing engineering economic studies.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD for design purposes.
- Significant experience adhering to electric utility system safety practices.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration in a team environment.
- Self-motivated to enhance work practices and outcomes.
Additional Qualifications for TSS.4 Level
- Professional registration as an Electrical Engineer in California or another state is required.
- Extensive experience in preparing engineering designs and construction packages for electric utility systems.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills to interact with various personnel levels.
- Proven experience in project coordination and oversight of electric utility system projects.
- Ability to work independently and lead teams to achieve strategic objectives.
