**Position Summary**

We are seeking a mid-to-senior level Semiconductor Laser Device Engineer with a strong background in semiconductor laser diodes. In this role, you will be responsible for defining, developing, and deploying high-power laser diode arrays. Your expertise in semiconductor optoelectronics will be crucial in specifying, designing, and overseeing the deployment of these arrays, while also addressing technology options such as thermal management and electronic drivers. Collaboration with LLNL team members will be key to advancing diode laser technology.

This position may be filled at either level based on the candidate's knowledge and experience as evaluated by the hiring team. Additional responsibilities may be assigned if hired at the higher level.

**Key Responsibilities**

  1. Design, build, and commission advanced semiconductor laser characterization tools and experiments.
  2. Lead complex experiments to characterize laser diode components.
  3. Utilize advanced data analysis and simulation software to support experimental objectives.
  4. Conduct advanced research in collaboration with university and industrial partners to explore novel approaches for enhancing laser diode technology.
  5. Specify, procure, evaluate, and deploy commercially available laser diode arrays on LLNL systems.
  6. Perform additional duties as assigned.

**Additional Responsibilities for SES.4 Level**

  1. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, focusing on the development and deployment of complex high-power diode laser pump arrays.
  2. Offer significant technical expertise to fulfill research/project vision and strategy while leading technical direction for self and others.
  3. Lead and mentor on technical activities related to the specification, procurement, evaluation, and deployment of laser diode arrays.

**Qualifications**

U.S. citizenship is required to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance.

A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is required.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with laser diodes, including micro-optics, opto-electronic device packaging, and reliability engineering principles.

Experience with opto-electronic device simulation, laser diode characterization, and optical simulation is essential.

Strong communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills are necessary for effective interaction with technical staff, management, and vendors.

**Additional Qualifications for SES.4 Level**

Proven leadership skills for managing small, multi-disciplinary teams.

Expertise in current state-of-the-art laser diodes, including semiconductor device physics and reliability physics.

Exceptional communication and collaboration skills to effectively present and advise senior management and external sponsors.

**Desired Qualifications**

A PhD in Electrical Engineering or Physics is preferred. Experience with high-power laser diode arrays, simulation software, and semiconductor fabrication technologies is advantageous.

Familiarity with characterization techniques for compound semiconductor optoelectronic devices and materials is beneficial.
