Spatial Ecology Research Scientist

Job Overview
The laboratory of Tammy Wilson at UMass Amherst is seeking a dedicated Spatial Ecologist to contribute to vital research focused on the impact of infrastructure and human habitation on the movement and habitat utilization of various wildlife species, including bears, moose, and deer. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication abilities and play a key role in fostering collaborations with state agencies and external partners. A strong foundation in quantitative analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is essential, along with familiarity in habitat selection modeling, movement analysis, and hotspot identification. Responsibilities will include the organization and analysis of spatial datasets from diverse sources, including telemetry and camera trap data, with some fieldwork involved in maintaining remote monitoring equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Gather and systematize spatial datasets. Collaborate with agency partners and contractors to develop research initiatives and analytical outputs that serve management needs. Analyze collected data and prepare scholarly articles for publication. Engage in fieldwork activities within Massachusetts. Mentor graduate students in data analysis techniques. Conduct regular meetings and virtual discussions to provide updates and collaborate with agency stakeholders. Assist in grant writing and the development of research proposals.Additional Responsibilities
Promote a collaborative and inclusive work environment that values teamwork and diversity. Partner with colleagues across the College of Natural Sciences to support strategic objectives. Perform other duties as necessary to advance the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.Required Qualifications
A PhD in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Geography, or a related field is required at the time of application. An active driver's license is necessary, with the ability to operate a government vehicle. Proven experience and a comprehensive understanding of GIS and spatial data analysis are essential. Experience with large datasets is required. Proficiency in constructing and executing complex models using ArcGIS, R, and/or JAGS, particularly for analyzing animal habitat preferences and movement patterns.Preferred Qualifications
A strong publication history is highly desirable. Familiarity with Python programming is advantageous. Experience conducting fieldwork in remote environments is preferred. Previous collaboration with agency partners is beneficial.Physical Requirements
The role involves year-round fieldwork, necessitating the ability to navigate rugged terrain for extended distances in varying weather conditions.Work Schedule
Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with flexibility available as needed. Full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.Compensation
Salary range: $63,000 - $72,000 annually.-
