Job Overview

The laboratory of Tammy Wilson at UMass Amherst is seeking a qualified Spatial Ecologist to engage in research focused on the impact of infrastructure and human habitation on the movement and habitat utilization of large mammals such as bears, moose, and deer. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication abilities and play a key role in fostering collaborations with state agencies and contractors. Proficiency in quantitative analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is essential, along with familiarity in habitat selection modeling, movement analysis, and hotspot identification. The role may also involve some fieldwork for the maintenance of remote monitoring equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Gather and systematize spatial datasets. Collaborate with agency partners and contractors to develop research and analytical products beneficial for management purposes. Analyze collected data and prepare scholarly articles for publication. Conduct fieldwork within the region. Mentor graduate students in data analysis techniques. Hold regular meetings and/or virtual discussions to provide updates and collaborate with agency partners. Assist in grant writing and the development of research initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities

Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork and diversity. Engage with colleagues across the campus to support strategic objectives. Perform other related duties as assigned to further the mission of the College of Natural Sciences.

Required Qualifications

A PhD in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Geography, or a closely related field is required at the time of application. An active driver's license is necessary, with the ability to operate a government vehicle. Demonstrated experience and a thorough understanding of GIS and spatial data analysis are essential. Experience with large datasets is required. Ability to construct and execute complex models using ArcGIS, R, and/or JAGS for analyzing animal habitat selection and movement patterns.

Preferred Qualifications

A strong record of publications is highly desirable. Experience with Python programming is advantageous. Prior fieldwork experience in remote environments is preferred. Familiarity with collaboration with agency partners is beneficial.

Physical Requirements

Fieldwork may require the ability to navigate rugged terrain for extended distances in varying weather conditions.

Work Schedule

Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with flexibility available as needed. Full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.

Compensation

Salary range: $63,000 - $72,000 annually.
