Position Description:

The Coastal Science and Policy Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is a dynamic, interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to enhancing coastal resilience, promoting conservation, and addressing critical issues in fisheries and aquaculture.

Our program is committed to developing a diverse group of emerging leaders in coastal sustainability through a comprehensive two-year Master’s degree, which includes practical experience with partner organizations, as well as a PhD emphasis.

As a hub for coastal innovation, the program offers unique opportunities such as the Blue Pioneers Program accelerator and the pioneering Hacking for Oceans course.

We actively foster research collaborations across various sectors, including academic institutions, government agencies, non-profits, and private organizations.

We invite applications for a part-time Associate Professor of Practice within the Coastal Science and Policy Program. Candidates should currently engage with non-profit, governmental, or community organizations that focus on coastal science and policy challenges.

We seek individuals who excel at applying interdisciplinary science to develop practical solutions for coastal issues and can serve as exemplary role models for the career paths our curriculum prepares students to pursue.

Under the guidance of the Program Director, the selected candidate will be responsible for teaching one to two core courses annually for the Master’s program.

Additionally, the appointee will mentor students on year-long capstone projects, contribute to grant proposals to support student initiatives, and may serve on committees for PhD emphasis students.

The ideal candidate will possess expertise in utilizing social science methodologies to address coastal challenges, emphasizing community engagement, equity, and inclusion.

Successful candidates will leverage their professional networks to assist students in securing relevant partnerships, funding, and career opportunities that align with their educational experiences.

We are particularly interested in applicants with a strong background in applied research that translates to real-world applications, extensive multicultural professional networks, and a proven track record in mentoring and teaching at the graduate level.

Qualifications:

Basic qualifications include a Ph.D. in coastal environmental management, biology, ecology, anthropology, environmental policy, or a related discipline, along with concurrent experience in a relevant non-academic organization.

Applicants should have a minimum of three years of practical experience in coastal sustainability or related fields and at least one year of university-level teaching experience.

Application Requirements:

Applicants must submit a comprehensive curriculum vitae, a cover letter summarizing qualifications, a statement of research accomplishments, and optional statements regarding teaching and contributions to diversity.

Three to five letters of reference are also required, submitted confidentially.
