Description

The Education Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor and Program Director of Teacher Education. The department is particularly interested in candidates who will lead the Master of Arts/Credential Program (MA/C) in its mission to develop teachers who are change agents dedicated to fostering equitable and effective schooling for all K-12 students. We seek applicants with experience directing a comprehensive teacher education program who can bring vision and innovative approaches to pre-service and in-service teacher development. Teaching professors have a standard load of six course equivalencies, of which 3 will be courses across two of the department's programs and 3 will be administrative and mentoring duties related to being MA/C program director. Courses will include introductory courses in education and teaching, or other courses depending on expertise. Other duties include advising and mentoring Masters and undergraduate students, working with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, maintaining an active profile of professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, and performing university, public, and professional service.

The Department prepares approximately 70 credential students for teaching in K-12 California public schools. The program, which also grants a Masters of Arts in Education, operates on a year-round (summer to summer) schedule. Under the direction of the Department Chair, as the MA/C Program Director the successful candidate will be responsible for day-to-day program components; reviewing applications for Teacher Supervisors and Lecturers; overseeing student teaching placements in county schools; coordinating the teaching performance assessment for credential candidates (e.g., EdTPA and/or CalTPA); monitoring student progress; leading report writing and long-term planning; building and sustaining partnerships with educators and administrators in regional school districts; and adhering to California's state credentialing guidelines. The selected candidate will supervise and evaluate approximately six Teacher Supervisors and lecturers, organize and support students and instructors with a particular emphasis on the recruitment and retention of a diverse student cohort. The MA/Credential program is supported by a dedicated Credential Analyst and department staff. The successful candidate will also serve as Chair of the Teacher Education Committee (TEC), and lead the Education Department faculty in assessing program strengths and envisioning and implementing improvements and reforms.

The University of California, Santa Cruz, a Hispanic Serving Institution, serves a mix of suburban and rural schools in which many students are immigrants or the children of immigrants. We are committed to inquiry-based pedagogies for preparing teachers to improve the education of linguistically and culturally diverse students and promote equity and social justice. We welcome candidates who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
