Job Title: Department Administrator/Chief Operating Officer

Columbia University Medical Center seeks a highly skilled and experienced Department Administrator/Chief Operating Officer to join our team. This is a full-time position that will report to the Chair of the Department and the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration.

Job Summary:

The Department Administrator/COO is responsible for planning and organizing the Department's financial affairs and administering its clinical, educational, and research programs. This includes managing the department's finance and accounting practices, as well as its financial relationships with the Medical School, Columbia University Medical Center, Columbia University, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and other affiliations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the department's finance and accounting practices, including revenue/expense reporting and control systems, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Develop and implement business plans for new and proposed programs, and negotiate with external entities to maximize financial resources.
  • Oversee the clinical operations of the Department, including the faculty practice plan and accounts payable and receivable at all practice sites.
  • Manage the department's research-related financial activities, including grant management and compliance with University, P&S, and funding agency regulations.
  • Supervise central administrative staff and manage departmental human resource functions, including recruitment, payroll, and benefits.
  • Assure compliance with CU, CUMC, Medical School, NYP, union, and governmental policies, procedures, and regulations related to financial affairs, physician billing, grants and contracts, practice enhancement, and philanthropy matters.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus ten years of related experience. Master's preferred.
  • Effective leadership and organizational skills, with proven ability to manage and lead staff in a changing environment.
  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to manage complex information and computer systems, including managerial accounting and finance principles.
  • Understanding of the evolving health care marketplace, with ability to identify opportunities to enhance income from development and revenue sources.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students, with experience in the supervision of administrative and support staff personnel.
