POSITION SUMMARY

The role of the Estimator is vital in our project planning and execution framework. You will be tasked with the precise estimation of costs associated with earthwork and utility construction projects, ensuring our bids remain competitive while safeguarding profitability. Your analytical skills will be essential in evaluating project specifications, interpreting blueprints, and collaborating closely with our project management team to deliver timely and accurate cost estimates. Additionally, you will have the chance to foster relationships with subcontractors and suppliers, which is crucial for the success of our projects. PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT

As part of our selection process, candidates are required to complete a Predictive Index Behavioral and Cognitive Assessment. This assessment focuses on communication preferences and problem-solving capabilities, rather than measuring intelligence or experience. OBJECTIVES

  • Provide accurate cost estimates for earthwork and utility construction projects, encompassing materials, labor, equipment, and additional expenses.
  • Prepare competitive bids that secure contracts while ensuring a reasonable profit margin for the company.
  • Evaluate project risks and integrate contingencies into estimates to accommodate unforeseen circumstances that may affect costs.
  • Identify opportunities for cost optimization without compromising project quality through value engineering.
  • Work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure estimates align with project goals and requirements.
  • Continuously enhance estimating processes by incorporating feedback, adopting innovative technologies, and staying informed about industry developments.
  • Consider client needs and expectations when formulating estimates, aiming to deliver exceptional value.
  • Analyze feedback data to refine estimating accuracy.
  • Monitor awarded contracts as necessary, including estimating additional work items and change orders.

COMPETENCIES

  • Technical Knowledge: Proficient in construction estimating software, with the ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications, and a solid understanding of construction materials and methods.
  • Quantitative Skills: Strong mathematical and analytical abilities for calculating quantities and costs, and preparing detailed estimates.
  • Attention to Detail: Skill in thoroughly reviewing project documents, identifying potential issues, and providing comprehensive estimates.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Capability to recognize challenges, develop solutions, and recommend strategies to enhance cost efficiency and project effectiveness.
  • Communication Skills: Proficient in engaging with project teams, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to gather information, present estimates, and negotiate contracts.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work efficiently to fulfill project requirements.
  • Negotiation Skills: Competence in negotiating with subcontractors and suppliers to secure competitive pricing and favorable contract terms.
  • Cost Control: Understanding of cost control techniques and strategies to monitor and manage project expenses throughout the construction process.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a team environment, collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
  • Ethical Standards: Commitment to ethical practices in preparing estimates, handling confidential information, and conducting business transactions.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some college education is preferred but not mandatory.
  • A valid/active driver's license and access to a functioning vehicle are required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in estimating earthwork and underground utilities, including water, sanitary sewer, and storm systems on both private and public projects.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position involves prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Occasional travel may be required.
