Job Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine at The Larner College of Medicine (LCOM) at The University of Vermont is actively seeking a dedicated Emergency Medicine Physician interested in an academic career within the field.

Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor (Clinical Scholar Pathway), depending on the candidate's experience and achievements.

The Department offers clinical services across six hospital locations within the Network.

Our academic and educational initiatives extend throughout the Network, allowing our physicians to deliver clinical care at various sites.

Clinical roles may be available at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC); Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH); Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC); Porter Medical Center (PMC); Elizabethtown Community Hospital (ECH); or Alice Hyde Medical Center (AHMC).

Educational duties differ by location but typically involve direct teaching and supervision of LCOM medical students, UVMMC Emergency Medicine residents, and learners from various healthcare disciplines.

The University of Vermont Medical Center serves as the primary teaching hospital for The Larner College of Medicine.

It is recognized as an ACS verified Level 1 Trauma Center for adults and a Level 2 Trauma Center for pediatric patients, functioning as a significant tertiary referral center for Vermont and upstate New York.

With an annual patient volume of 62,000, the emergency department is renowned for its high-quality patient care and committed teaching faculty.

Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, NY, is the second-largest facility in the Network and acts as a regional referral center.

CVPH operates as an ACS Level 3 trauma center, receiving numerous patients from upstate New York.

With over 40,000 emergency department visits annually, physicians engage in a community-focused environment while maintaining a strong affiliation with the UVMHN Emergency Medicine residency and participating in medical student education.

Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, VT, caters to approximately 26,000 patients each year and serves as a training site for both LCOM medical students and UVMMC Emergency Medicine residents.

The emergency department is the main entry point for patients admitted to various levels of care across 122 inpatient beds.

Porter Medical Center, located in Middlebury, VT, serves a vibrant academic community and surrounding rural areas.

This critical-access site sees around 15,000 emergency visits annually.

Elizabethtown Community Hospital offers emergency services at two critical access locations, treating approximately 8,000 patients per year in resource-limited environments.

Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, NY, serves around 14,000 patients annually and comprises a 76-bed acute care facility, a long-term care and skilled nursing facility, multiple family health centers, and a walk-in clinic to support the North Country of New York.

Successful candidates will be expected to engage in the academic, educational, and scholarly missions of the UVMHN.

Applicants must hold Board Certification or Board Eligibility from the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and be eligible for licensure in New York and Vermont.

While all interested candidates are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to those with a background in teaching, clinical practice, and research within academic emergency medicine.

The University is particularly interested in candidates who can enhance the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service contributions.

Applicants are encouraged to include in their cover letter details on how they will advance this goal.

The University of Vermont is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other legally protected category.

The University encourages applications from individuals who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the institution.

Interested candidates should apply online, including a cover letter summarizing qualifications, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references.

Applicants may also submit a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) plan outlining efforts to foster a more inclusive environment.

Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled.
