We are currently seeking a seasoned Lead Communication Systems Engineer to enhance our expanding team. Reporting directly to the VP of RF Systems & Payloads, this role will serve as a pivotal authority in spacecraft communication systems architecture and design. The Lead Communication Systems Engineer will play a crucial leadership role in crafting next-generation communication systems for innovative small satellite constellations. Additionally, this position will contribute to the development and execution of the technical roadmap for spacecraft and payload products, encompassing both internal and customer-funded development initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assume technical ownership of a system or subsystem, maintaining engagement throughout its lifecycle from conception through design, manufacturing, testing, verification, calibration, and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with clients to define system requirements and manage all technical facets of the mission.
  • Design system architectures that effectively meet both customer and internal specifications.
  • Conduct system trade studies and analyses to balance performance, risk, and cost considerations.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to devise optimal solutions for complex challenges.
  • Engage with suppliers to establish subsystem requirements and oversee their technical performance.
  • Provide support to other program and product teams, offering subject matter expertise, reviews, or input as necessary.

Qualifications and Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or physical sciences.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in hardware development and systems engineering.
  • Proven experience in developing intricate satellite communication systems.
  • Demonstrated success in creating high-complexity satellite systems or subsystems.
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience with:
    • Link budget, availability, and capacity analysis.
    • Modulation and coding techniques.
    • Multiple access techniques.
    • Latency analysis.
  • Experience in capturing communication system architectures through detailed block diagrams and equipment lists.
  • Exceptional communication skills with a track record of technical leadership.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in design and documentation.
  • Preferred qualifications include:
    • Master's or Doctoral degree in engineering or physical sciences.
    • Understanding of antenna design principles, phased array systems, and gain/loss budgets.
    • Familiarity with key suppliers of space-qualified communications systems hardware and components.
    • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
    • Experience with space system program lifecycles, development flows, testing events, and verification and validation processes.

Physical Requirements
