Position Overview

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is in search of a skilled Clinical Nurse Specialist to become a vital part of our Medical / Surgical Unit 3B, working full-time during the day shift.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for delivering expert clinical practice and care coordination, emphasizing a comprehensive understanding of patients, families, nursing staff, and healthcare teams. This role ensures the provision of safe and effective care in a holistic manner, respecting the diverse needs of each patient and family. The specialist integrates their knowledge, skills, and experiences to support patients and families throughout their healthcare experience, including education and support. Effective communication and collaboration with other healthcare professionals are essential, fostering a respectful and understanding environment across disciplines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts thorough patient health evaluations by analyzing various data sets and understanding their interconnections.
  • Develops personalized care plans based on assessment results and identifies trends within patient populations to implement best practices.
  • Delivers all patient care with a focus on patient and family-centered approaches, utilizing knowledge and skills to address the needs of patients and families throughout their care continuum.
  • Advocates for patient rights, providing guidance and acting as a resource to resolve any concerns.
  • Coordinates healthcare services and alternative resources for effective patient/family transition planning.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of all patient care activities in accordance with established standards and assists team members with documentation processes.
  • Assesses outcomes and adjusts care plans as necessary, anticipating patient variances.
  • Makes informed clinical decisions based on experience and patient data while encouraging the development of clinical judgment among team members.
  • Communicates effectively and collaborates with colleagues, demonstrating respect and understanding for other clinical roles.
  • Guides staff in assessing patients' educational needs and measuring the outcomes of patient education.
  • Provides mentorship and direction to others regarding clinical practices, serving as a resource and coordinating unit activities as required.
  • Utilizes established standards and guidelines for care delivery, ensuring a cohesive approach through direct communication, technology, and teamwork.
  • Engages in professional development by completing a minimum of six formal contact hours and maintaining a record of continuing education.
  • Evaluates clinical and quality outcomes, contributing to initiatives aimed at performance improvement.
  • May undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

• Minimum of one year of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care environment.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required; candidates with an Associate's Degree must obtain a BSN within two years of employment.

• Current BLS for Healthcare Provider Certification from the American Heart Association is mandatory.

• Must possess or be eligible for RN licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

• Proficient in English with strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Required proficiency in computer skills.
