Position Overview

The Director of Marketing and Communications (DMC) serves as a visionary leader dedicated to enhancing the brand identity of The Washington Ballet and The Washington School of Ballet. This role is pivotal in engaging a diverse audience and ensuring that the organization remains prominent in the minds of potential patrons across various demographics.

The DMC is tasked with overseeing all aspects of marketing, communication, media relations, and visual branding. By leveraging extensive experience and creativity, the DMC aims to boost engagement with TWB, promoting educational program enrollment and increasing attendance at performances. This includes crafting targeted messaging to optimize revenue streams from ticket sales, school registrations, and merchandise.

In collaboration with the Board of Directors' Marketing Committee and other senior leadership, the DMC will continuously refine the marketing strategy to align with organizational goals, driving audience engagement and ticket sales. This encompasses developing pricing strategies and fostering interdepartmental collaboration to maximize revenue from various sources.

The DMC is responsible for managing the marketing budget, ensuring that strategies are sustainable and yield a positive return on investment while aligning with the organization's commitment to both artistic and business objectives. Reporting to both the Executive and Artistic Directors, the DMC will also work closely with senior staff, external vendors, and board members. This role includes managing, recruiting, and retaining a skilled team in communications, marketing, audience engagement, and patron services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives based on audience data and historical trends to guide departmental activities.
  • Design and execute programs that utilize data analytics to enhance revenue through increased attendance and customer loyalty.
  • Elevate TWB's visibility within the local arts and entertainment landscape, supporting efforts to transition ticket buyers into donors.
  • Identify partnership opportunities with similar organizations and represent TWB in both local and national forums.
  • Proactively seek public relations opportunities to highlight TWB's initiatives and achievements.
  • Lead the Marketing and Communications Department, overseeing recruitment, management, and professional development of staff and contractors.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen brand reputation and maximize income.
  • Mentor colleagues on marketing strategies and manage relationships with audience members and educational stakeholders.
  • Prepare and manage the marketing budget, ensuring compliance with organizational strategies and vendor contracts.
  • Analyze the performance of marketing tools and platforms to inform strategy adjustments.
  • Manage vendor relationships to enhance ticket sales and brand presence.
  • Collaborate with senior team members to explore opportunities for audience growth through community engagement and special events.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements that can benefit TWB's revenue goals.
  • Oversee merchandise initiatives to boost revenue across various platforms.
  • Supervise key marketing personnel, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in marketing or public relations, preferably within the arts or non-profit sector, with at least 4 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven expertise in branding, marketing, communications, and ticket sales.
  • Strong understanding of market dynamics and audience engagement in the region.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills.
  • Familiarity with multimedia production and digital marketing.
  • Outstanding organizational and collaborative abilities.
  • Experience in staff management and effective communication with senior leadership.
  • Detail-oriented, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
  • Ability to thrive in high-pressure environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in ballet as an art form.
  • Experience with ticketing systems and content management.
  • Familiarity with digital marketing tools and design software.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
